  1. That we know of...yes it can be done. but it's going to take some extra cash to do it. :ack: you may have to have the interior and drive train taken out and shipped seperatly it also might depend on local laws like emissions for your state-county. the car could be registered as an off road only...or perhaps as an assembled or kit? just thoughts.
  2. what is this word "retirement"? strange concept...all i know is one day someone will have to call me off work dead..
  3. Have a Cool Yule and awesome Holidays! may the new year bring peace and prosperity..and many miles under our tires weathering out the winter waiting for the Birkin to arrive. Hope to join in the fun when the weather turns better..
  4. Dont know if this will fit or help. allot of the old triumphs had a flip top type aluminum gas cap. I think it's also called a monza type. anyways some had a release lever some were simply magnetic but they had an extended filler tube that simply clamped to the filler hose between the tank and cap. i have retrofitted these to several cars in the past and they look awesome and work fairly well. I was even allowed to race with it on, but wire tied down. you can probably ebay one ofr find one at your local swap meet cheap. i bought the last few for about 25$. you can polish the aluminum to your hearts content. i w9ll probably try and fit one on the birkin...when we get it.
  5. sure if you can, we actually bought one of these episodes off e-bay. I was pretty tame and we sat and watched it with our kids and enjoyed a movie night,
  6. for the immediate moment, i want to play fair and be patient,,,besides i do understand it's the holiday season. after the new year though, we might have to take a slightly diffrent approach. help was offered by a member here and i want to see how that plays out first.
  7. my home address is 2357 copley rd akron ohio 44320 wow greatly appreciated! how much do we need to send you for the book and shipping i have to admit i am surprised by the HP #'s i am reading here in reference to the x-flow. The little 1300 a-series in my sprite will give me 100 streetable hp on a set of S.U.'s i would figure that 125 hp or more would be quiet common for a weber carb'd 1600+ engine. especially with the x-flow configuration. but as said...i need to educate myself here
  8. If it was only that easy!:iagree: But the car has been already paid for as a complete running car. I had to pay for the car first, to get the broker and owner to understand i was serious about the purchase. Then the owner went into action,,and found a problem that should have been known from the start. I am heavily considering taking it "as is" for a lesser price than that which has been already paid. I am sure we could get it up and running very well ourselves. your right this would be a good option...IF i could. But the owner who is working through a broker doesnt want to do take less because he will loose money on the whole deal..and he doesnt want to spend more money getting it fixed either...i could recieve the car without an engine, but only for a price that doesnt nearly make up the diffrence. As well the owner doesnt want to spend the money to trailer it to someone who has already offered to help as well..because of the price of gas to trailer it. So as i understand it..unless the owner changes his mind,,i have to recieve the car as a running vehicle without money being spent to do so..or risk spending more than what was already made a deal for.. Additionally, i already have 2 full restoration projects underway and Mary would blow a head gasket if she knew i was recieveing YET another project. :ack: i am working on this as well, happily she is not your typical sportscar widow and wants this car as well..but running as promised...((got her emerald earings for christmas...shhh )) i'm such a suck up It may be a very simple fix,,we are not afraid of doing the neccisary work, we are very used to complete rebuilds from junk. Luckily a fellow list member here is willing to look at the car and hopefully can provide a few answers on the problem and condition, but i cant make the owner accept the help either..i can only offer the solution. trust me..i am trying EVERYTHING i can to resolve this and put the car in our shop. from what we have seen, and the history,,it's a near perfect car otherwise.
  9. Seth, did my PM to you go through? i cant seem to tell...
  10. Much appreciated.. we are playing the waiting game right at the moment.. Something i admit we are not very good at.:nonod:
  11. If i thought this was an option i would persue it.. but it's probably one of those last options. truth might be i couldnt possibly afford myself and my own hourly rate... meanwhile back at the ranch...i have wrote a few of the contacts so far, hoping to get a positive reply.
  12. Longer story would go deeper...we need someone in or close to Austin Texas..... Texasmotorworks cannot help with this problem. yet..
  13. If it was in our shop,,,we would solve the unknown problem ourselves..we do our own work. But this is a matter of the present owner who isnt very mechanically savy trying to solve it. It's not coming out of our pocket... Yet..:skep:
  14. Is there anyone in the Austin Texas area, or anyone that knows anyone in the austin texas area, that could be of some help looking at a ford x-flow engined car? Long story...but the puchase of the Birkin has encountered a snag with the 1600 x-flow/webers/tuning/internals/ ignition..., :willy: Apparently the car is running rough and the owner needs to get it right before it transfers into our hands..Or at least figure out the problem so we know what we are looking at. we are up here in Akron Ohio... and can,t diagnose the problem from 1361 miles away.. any help or suggested mechanics (formula ford gurus?) are appreciated.
  15. Yes had this happen to us Several times.. GRRrrrrrr:mad: it seems as if mary's car is flypaper for idiots. Ok mistakes happen, thats why it's called an accident but dammit be responsable! in defense...i happened to be the one inflicting damage one time years ago...:banghead: but i went and found the owner, faced what i caused and fully paid the damages.
  16. "Please if your going to jump, dont hit the poor sailboats below, it makes such a mess" :ack:
  17. The car will mostly be used for..well..about all we can, not unlike what mr slomove does here..(from what we read) We will be doing some track days as well as some auto-xing. but yes, the car will be used 70% on the street. has anyone put a fuel injection system on the 1600? or if i am going to do something like that why didnt i just move up to a diffrent powerplant/zetec etc?
  18. Thanks so far guys..ANY info would be great.. for the time being...we will probably just keep the 1600 kent block we have. i might have a lead on an good aluminum head cheap.. of course giving up pasta would loose the same weight...but not as trick! (and a polished aluminum head would just be cool) As far as the pinto engine...from what we know, it was a 2000 OHC engine but my 1600 kent is traditional pushrod head. same block? i would guess the OHV engine to be taller as well...no? would such a thing fit under the bonnet? then i see theres a 1700 as well..and even a 2300? are these all variations-diffrent bores on the same block? it's not that easy is it? :willy: As far as oil leaks... I have owned british cars for 25 years...:_deadhorse: they help kill the grass in my driveway! even a brand new freshly built 1275 a-series new seals and gaskets leaks like crazy! i am quiet used to it.
  19. is there a book, or a good general website that i/we can educate myself about the various ford 4 cylinder engines and there interchangeabilty, specs, dimensions, uses, general and detailed info etc etc...? Our new birkin is comming with a ford kent 1.6 x-flow. It seems like a nice engine but we are used to the A-series brit stuff and dont know much about the care and feeding of this new (to us) ford engine. Perhaps tuning ability? what to use and not use? As well, it would be interesting to see how it compares to say..a pinto OHC engine, or a 2.0 or...whatever? What should we do or not do to the engine? ok...for now lets assume a zetec is several years away, we wont be going to a bike engine and we decide to keep what we have for a while..would an aluminum head be a good investment? This 1.6 is the same as the formulas ford engine right? Just trying to learn about what we are getting into with the little ford stuff...so we can ask intelligent questions.
  20. 4 feet...well we are talking about the frozen wastelands of northeast ohio... Gary you put ski's on the RV-4? hmm...what if we replaced the front wheels with snowmobile ski's and...:ack: anyways..if all goes well we should be taking delivery of our car within a month we hope. Just in time to tinker around a little bit , wax it a few dozen times and get it ready to play for next spring..darn Cant wait!!:toetap:
  21. i just wet myself...
  22. Now that the subject is here...and the north east ohio snow is blowing across the frozen tundra of akron: We were curious what is the best snow tire everyone uses here on there 7's ? :leaving:
  23. gee.... With us buying the Birkin, we are making the technological leap from S.U's to Webers... why do i feel like a caveman? We would be happy with a working gas gauge and lights.
  24. UGh....now HERE is a lotus 7 (Birkin i believe) mishap!! only look if you have a strong stomach.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Lotus-Super-7-68-Lotus-Super-7-Yellow-B-1921_W0QQitemZ230197398101QQihZ013QQcategoryZ6312QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem We really feel for this guy, can anyone shed some light on what happened here, perhaps so it can be prevented in the future?
  25. We have had a trailer for years..and tow with a old stepvan EX fed-ex truck we call "the breadtruck". We tow the sailboat with it as well. Actually, the breadtruck has been everywhere and done about everything..camping, towing, and even a big obnoxous limosine. Now.....with the birkin we are getting...one of the goals might be to see if we can fit the birkin..INTO the breadtruck!! Now,,there is NO way the Birkin wil ever be a trailer queen.. whats the point in that? but on some longer extended trips,,,we will tow for sure.. our present trailer is about 2x what we ever need..but has come in handy for many things. but it does need the breadtruck to tow it!
