I learned something in Drivers' ED today
twobone replied to blubarisax's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Glad to hear you are OK. Hope you get her back in fighting shape soon -
I guess its because my car is an S3 chassis with a live axle and does not have an enclosed pedal box cover. The PO had sealed up the louver covers over the pedal box and also over the coil and battery area just behind the carbs. This probably contributes to heat in the foot wells, so I think i will remove some of the tape over some of those louvers and try to stay out of the rain There is always something to remove/add/replace/adjust/experiment with on these cars. That's half the fun though.

I thought about that as my speedo is running fast since I lowered my tire profile. However, I poked around my front axles and can't find any sensor or wires. I will follow the speedo cable and see where she goes.

I had a funny experience when getting my car emissions tested. We put the car up on the metal rollers and I was asked to bring it up to 40 KPH. Once I hit about 20KPH, all I got was wheel spin on the rollers. I would get to 4,000 in 1st gear and when I shifted to 2nd I would lose traction. So they called over "Bob" the biggest guy in the shop to sit on my rear bulk head to give enough weight to get it up to speed. As an aside, I was surprised that my speedo was not reading while on the dyno. It is mechanical and reads off the gear box right? So if the rear wheels are turning, my speedo should work. Maybe I was too focused on the chaos at the time and did not notice it moving around.

Holy smokes. I never really had an appreciation for the elevation changes at Bathurst. Folks in North America wax poetically about the corkscrew at Leguna Seca. I'm sorry, but based on what I just watched, Bathurst is in another different league. I put it up there with the Nurburghring. Thanks Peter!

I want to move to California and spend my weekends chasing you and your buddies in the hills. I still have great memories of a trip to San Fran and great drives around Woodside. Great video!

Here is a Caterham with some pretty blinding wheels:

Air Asia is a sponsor and so I think they have just painted up some planes to maximize the advertising. Great colours!

I think I'm going to try a local hot rod muffler guy who has a non-rebuildable muffler for $129 that is 24" by 6" round. in terms of total cubic volume it is over twice as large as my 22" by 4" muffler. Hopefully size is the key factor over funky design to lower noise. I will have to raise it up to avoid bashing it. Then again at $130, I will not worry too much about dents vs. a pretty aluminium can.

I'm going to have to get out on the track in my seven. I've done a handful of Porsche club days back when I owned an 81' and later an 84' Carrera. I was one of the slower guys due to equipment, limited skills and concern over damaging myself or the car. I wonder if the inherent lightness of the seven will mean that I mentally adjust to much higher corner speeds as my brain adjusted to the idea of dramatically less momentum being thrown around.

I was thinking of running two hushpower DBX 14 inch exhausts in series as part of my side exhaust. Will that be too restrictive even for street use?
-
I'm in search of a quiter exhaust. My neighbor who is an automotive guru suggests I replace my 4 inch wide really loud exhaust with a baffled exhaust to cut down on both the high and low frequency sound. It has 2 inch in and out pipes. Most of the round section mufflers I have seen are of the perforated re-packable design. What are the differences? I can give up some hp for lower dbs I'd like to keep the stock look with the round profile so I can mount my exhaust heat guard. I have young kids

OK, so I finally found out what a clean running xflow is suppossed to feel like. I dug into my webers and discovered I was running F11 55 idle jets. The standard spec is F9 50. I also replaced my idle needles. They were so worn they had lost their shape. With the new idle jets and needles, I was able to do the "best idle" tune so easily and now she has no nasty flat spots, no backfiring and a super clean transition from idle to main jets. Makes me wonder what the former japanese owner was thinking. He must have gotten some very bad advice in terms of idle jets. Happy driving!

Interesting....I would never have thought you could buy a nice condition Aston Martin for thirty grand. OK...its is not the greatest of Aston models, but still...pretty sweet http://www.wirewheel.com/2001-Aston-Martin-DB7-Vantage-Volante.html

I have not put many miles on the A539s. After doing a burn out to get rid of the slippery glue and compound, they seem good. They do have a nice tread pattern and they feel like they are going to be nice and sticky. I will report back after I get more time on them

GST is our canadian value added tax. So other than the shipping charge shown on their site, I suspect you will just have any applicable local taxes to you and any federal duty applicable to you

The tires were 45 GBP each. Total shipping was 135 GBP for the set of 4. The impression I have is that this firm does so much shipping that they have a special deal with UPS and others. There were no shipping charge surprises from UPS, which was a pleasant surprise. When I contacted other UK tire folks, they were not as eager to ship overseas. Midland tire can get other tires not listed on their site. Duty was 7% and GST is 8% Hope this helps.

Hi guys, Just wanted to share my recent experience with importing tires from the UK. I recently ordered a set of Yokohama A539 tires from Midland Wheels in the UK. These are common tires for Caterhams in the UK and are often used on academy racers. They were drop shipped by UPS to my door within about a week of ordering. When you back out the 7% duty and the 8% GST, they were $455 for four tires. There is no way I could get even close to those prices locally. http://www.midlandwheels.com/Shop/C-52-13.html I was nervous about the idea of shipment from the UK, but it turned out to be a breeze Highly recommended! They also look like they have a very tasty set of wheel options

Xmas comes early I'm sure it will be a great moment Welcome!

Thanks guys...some good options. I tried the silicone beer can shims last night. Will let it cure and then try it out. I also found that the lead coil wire was not well seated into the distributor. Also one of my idle jets may have been blocked. We will see how she runs on saturday
