Save the Date - 2020 Annual Sevens HPDE Event at NJMP - October 17/18, 2020
Croc replied to Croc's topic in National Events
I think it does for a variety of reasons: 1) You get to meet in person a bunch of like-minded car enthusiasts and geek out on their cars and how they solved problems encountered in their ownership. You will take away something new from the experience. You can build a network of local enthusiasts for joining you at club events, back road drives, autocross, etc. 2) As Tom noted, a bunch of us are instructors and can give instructor rides so you get a sense of what the cars can do in their natural environment they were designed for. I have already been negotiating the resumption of instructor rides in open cars - that should be resolved by September. There will be precautions to keep people safe - disinfected helmets, nomex balaclava (as a mask), open roof car only, etc. Final details still evolving but all looks achievable. 3) Its exciting - where else would you get to see Simon, Seb, Mike, ....who else?.....oh yes Dan, spray off into the scenery when they run out of talent. The 4 story observation tower at Thunderbolt gives a spectacular view of the track. 4) If you are a keen photographer, then bring your camera and I can have you shadow the official track photographer, Mike. Top guy. 5) If you are new to circuit driving, then maybe sit in the green group classroom session to pick up some ideas. 6) If you dont bring the seven but you have another suitable road car then think about signing up for the green group which uses a pace car to start slow and build up gradually. 7) Join in the comedy. This is not a serious event. Its not timed. We are relaxed. We are laughing. Its very social. I understand Covid-19 has caused many to re-evaluate plans for later this year but we have resumed days at the track and it has been good on a social distancing basis. They are still fine tuning the breakfasts and dinners for social distancing but it has been on the right track and to be fair they are struggling with the various Government chopping and changing of rules/regs this year. I expect everything to be perfect there by October. The only part of the event we have not decided on yet in a post-Covid world is the dinners. But I think I may solve that via BBQ catering at the garage where I can socially distance people at tables given the space available there. No rush to make a decision now - long ways before October. -
Troubleshooting: Running hot > hanging throttle + wanting to stall

Sorry to see this one Vlad. Bit a weird bunch of symptoms. Throttle linkage or throttle bodies would be revs situation. Did your alternator stop working and you had been on battery all the time - hence the electrical meltdown? -

Rule of thumb for me is: Pilot - clutch in, put in neutral and noise should disappear Throw out - clutch in, put in neutral, noise should persist (given clutch is not completely disengaging) If replacing then I would do everything inside the bell housing - clutch, any bearing, slave cylinder (if located in there). You only want to remove engine once so refresh everything is best. If transmission feels ok then I would just change transmission oil. I would not change the flywheel if it was me unless you are doing a LOT of track or autocross. If it goes wrong on your trip back then it will likely cause the clutch to disintegrate - there is a photo of somewhere on this forum of what I did to one on a former Caterham of mine when I thought the sound I heard on a track day was Zetec accessory belt squeal but it was actually pilot bearing...oops. But thats ok as it stays in the bellhousing and you will be replacing everything inside there anyway. Hows your AAA membership? Their platinum plus has 200 miles included towing - I usually use it once a year with one of my cars.

Best way to polish / restore the carbon fiber dash?
Croc replied to justinmarshall's topic in General Sevens Discussion
The carbon fiber does go cloudy if it gets wet and water gets into the weave. You can put armor all on it but its only temporary in its effect. Mer bumper polish is also suggested by guys on the Lotus 7 Club UK forum - hard to find here but I have a bottle from one of my trips there. I have not used the product you linked to but its an option. For switches - they all go faded like that eventually I am sad to say. They came off old 1970s Triumphs. I tried armor all/bumper polish/tire black all on the switches but it was only temporary. Replacement is the only sure fix - which fortunately is easy and fairly inexpensive. Caterham parts website has them all for purchase online - lights for example https://caterhamparts.co.uk/switches/224-switch-lights-1981-onwards.html?search_query=switches&results=60 Use the term "switches" and they will all come up along with the toggle type of switch if you need those. Fairly simple replacement too although its awkward hanging underneath the dash upside down - best done with a friend. Slide wires off terminals, push old switch forward out of dash, friend pushes new switch into dash, reconnect terminals....next switch. If Caterham are out of stock then Car Builder Solutions will have them - example here https://www.carbuilder.com/us/iva-rocker-switch-front-fog Search term at CBS is best with "switch" - all the correct looking options should then come up. Similar pricing. Both websites send to you pretty quickly despite being UK based. -
Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your purchase! Your new car really looks nice. If you look under the pedal box cover there is a Caterham VIN. On the auction thread it was SDKLDKANSY0021853. This deciphers as: SDK = Caterham L = Left Hand Drive D = DeDion rear suspension K = Kit built (build type - normal for US cars) A = Alternative chassis type NS = Engine not supplied. US import rules at the time (and even now) required a separate purchase of the engine/transmission Y = 2000 chassis produced at factory 0021853 = chassis number All of this is expected in a US delivered kit build - no surprises It is an S3 chassis. There are three types of chassis size/types produced by Caterham: 1) S3 = regular size. 2) S5 or SV = wider version. 4 inches wider in the cockpit and 4 inches longer in the cockpit 3) CSR = same size as S5/SV but with independent rear suspension and inboard front suspension The reference you made to model numbers (160 and 165 models) are current Caterham model naming - does not relate to what you have that well. Your drive train is a 2L Zetec with throttle bodies. Came out of a Ford Focus of similar vintage. These were about 145hp in that format. With the throttle bodies, custom ECU and possibly some other internal work, then I guess you may have 20-30+hp more than the standard. Not sure. The documentation that came with the car should provide more insight. The gearbox is a Ford T-9 - used to be in the Ford/Mercury Capri from the early 70s. Its 60s era design so will not be as slick changing as a modern car - be patient as you try to hustle the changes. A secret with wheels on a Caterham is that the acceleration and handling is improved the smaller you go - to say 13 inches. The wheel gets lighter, less rotational and unsprung mass. A thicker sidewall not only improves the ride but improves feel of the car close or at breakaway. The only downside of this is you have to thinking about tire/wheel diameter to ensure adequate ground clearance plus it can be difficult to find tires for 13inch wheels although Avon (ZZS/ZZR) and Toyo have good ones.

Its really well written - it conveys what it is like for the average person coming into one of these builds. It conveys the wry humor of screwing up. It also conveys the sense of achievement of noodling and solving the problems. It also lays the ground work for the next article in series which should convey the deep satisfaction of building a living and running thing.

Foaming expansion tank at revs/ coolant overflow/ what tank do I have?
Croc replied to fatallightning's topic in General Tech
Its off a Rover 200/400 up to 1995. The Rover was derived off a Honda in a pretty basic form of engineering, so there is a Honda part equivalent out there. The tall back leg is cut down to suit where mounted. https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-EAP8713 -

It’s roughly a 420R in today’s model numbering. Caterham claims that as 210hp (fly wheel) but subtract 10-15hp added for marketing purposes. Chris of Sevens & Elans (the seller acting on consignment) produced a dyno plot showing 191hp (fly wheel). He made the comment he assembled it early on but you had to be quick to catch it. I don’t know the car - have not seen it come up for sale before. I assume it was a New England car as Chris was located north of Worcester MA until a few years ago. I have not seen anything in the auction that is a negative other than the usual complaints about CA and waistlines being too big. I assume you have checked that you will not have a title or registration or emissions issues (car has no cat)?
