That was not my Ultralite. Those photos were from an old sevens event at NJMP. The weather was looking ominous overnight so we stacked everything into my garage just in case. I’ve had many jobs. I checked recently. If you place an order today then your production slot could be as early as April. That means shipping no later than June. The long waiting lists have disappeared. Partly this is the price rises dampening demand but more importantly, the new factory has significantly upped production capacity.

They are interpreting the proposed tariff that way. The administration has not actually stated that tariffs will be applied to auto parts. They have just said it will be on autos. Even then it is not clear if autos includes light trucks, heavy trucks, SUVs, etc. The devil is in the policy definitions which probably have not been drafted yet alone contemplated in any depth. No US manufacturer has been advocating for tariffs. It would be an absolute bear to restructure their Mexican and Canadian production lines for complete autos and more importantly auto components/parts. Ford was talking this week about it being an inital $5B pre-tax charge to their bottom line. Thats hefty. A company like Dodge really does not have all that capital spare to waste given their products need updating in a lot of segments. Strangely enough, tariffs would somewhat suit Toyota (give a mild competitor advantage over its peer competitors) because they lucked out with their mix of production facility locations for their various models.

What little has been published on these threatened tariffs has concentrated on completed autos, trucks and the like. No mention of what will happen to auto parts has been made so we can only speculate. But logically for the tariff to work the way the government seems to want, it has to include auto parts - which is what your Caterham will be when it enters the USA. The big auto manufacturers have taken the position that auto components and parts will be subject to any tariff. Now its a matter of whether they will come in or not? It was always a negotiation ploy to get something the Trump administration wanted, which seems to be immigration related in this instance. What is not clear is whether he will force the tariffs in anyway to restructure the US economy inwards and disconnect its global trade links in the affected areas. I get the other countries will retaliate with tariffs and it ends up being a zero sum game. That does not help you since you pay the tariff. Its a gambling problem for you, just as it is for everyone else and the businesses in this predicament. When is your final payment date? Trying to see where that is relative to what is published out there on possible tariff application dates?

I was given the chance to do a single race in a Lotus Cortina as i swapped my Lotus 7 S2 - we both wanted to try each other’s cars out. The chassis was quite flexible, even with a roll cage, hence the wheel lifting. But you never really felt the front wheels lift unlike other historic cars with chassis like a wet noodle (e.g. Holdens, Ford Falcons, Galaxies, or the later Capri, …). You did know when the inside rear came up as that would cause the suspension to make crash noises as you hit max droop. it was quite underpowered, you drove it like a Mini - never ever lift - maintaining momentum was critical. On bias ply tires it would easily rotate from rear offsetting the understeer you could get by stuffing it into a corner too fast with too much throttle. Remarkably forgiving chassis. You could get odd extreme steering angles and you could bring it back. I don’t remember brakes being that effective - but that’s about normal for anything in the 1960s. I cannot get a 1965 Mustang to stop today with modern pads but you did not need brakes on the Cortina whereas you do on the Mustang (or Galaxy if we are thinking period competitors - oh hell you needed brakes on the Galaxys!). For its period it was incredibly successful - bridging the mini and the Galaxy. The mini needed more power for its chassis. The Galaxy had power - oh Lordy did it ever - but it handled worse than a bag of potatoes and brakes were just words on a spec page. it was fragile in period. Designed to last the length of a sprint race in the UK. Most of this has been engineered out now in historic race cars although you still see the odd road car come down with the usual reliability afflictions. The Cortina’s success came from its ability to bridge its competitor’s weaknesses and be a better allrounder. Drive one if you get the chance. It was a super car of its age.

The Prisoner colors are just such a classic good look. My suggestion is you drive it as it is. Then put some 13 inch wheels with good performance rubber on it and drive it again to experience the improvement from such a massive reduction in unsprung weight. The 'wagon wheels' at 16 inches always made a Caterham look ungainly to my eyes and they were very heavy.
