So, tell us a little about yourselves
locostv8 replied to slngsht's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I guess now that I've posted a bit I should probably introduce myself. I'm Jim Hankins and live in the huge metropolus of Glen Lyn, VA. We have 2 convenience stores and somewhere around 20 buisnesses, one of which is me and I've retired. In a former life I did Computer consulting primaraly in Manufacturing and Military Logistics. Retired I now spend most of my time in school, I bought and live in the town school. I could probably host a meet but with only 6 acres around the house would probably have to limit to not much nore than 150. I do have some acerage behind me, 180, but an ORV would probably be more comfortable there. I tell people that I retired to build Hot Rods. My feeling about HP is that too much is nearly enough. I started going to the races when I was 12 (early 60s) with Jim Chaffee who was the west coast SCCA tech director and his wife was the club secty. He raced a Devin/AH/Chevy special named the Pink Elephant, it was the car that Pat Boon wrecked in the movie State Fair. At that time most sports racers were homebuilt. Some of my DDs have been BMW Isetta, Bugeye, EMPI Sportster, D Gass 55 Chev, Split window Stingray, Alfa Gulietta Veloche (really messed with) that I was stopped once for noisy carbs, 66 Charger done at Ak Millers with twins and propane (drove this durring the first gas chrisis), Mid engined Corsa, 93 Cobra which I can't get to 60 in my driveway, etc. I am in the process of building 2 LC7s. Put-Put is basically a rebody of a 78 V8 Mustang 2. Shagnasty is 392(roller 351) drysumped and EFI, T5, IFS (MN12), IRS (2000 Cobra R/MN12), 03 Cobra brakes including Hydroboost and ABS, 17x9s front with 255 40 17 and 17x10.5 rear with 315 35 17, target weight between 1400 to 1600lb, target HP above 500 (this one should top or at least get near 60 in the driveway). http://wrangler.rutgers.edu/gallery/d/12136-4/overland1.jpg" height="480" width="640 DD http://wrangler.rutgers.edu/gallery/d/12125-2/DSC02230.jpg" height="480" width="640 Retired DD http://wrangler.rutgers.edu/gallery/d/33676-2/Re-exposure+of+DSC00025.JPG" height="480" width="640 Jeep/Crawler/Truck Thingy Album >http://wrangler.rutgers.edu/gallery/v/7slotgrille/hssss/ locostv82006-08-25 17:43:44 -
I do think that is important to define what we are fans of LSiS or later you will get into the Cobra thing.

A thought about boards/etc. Would it not be appropriate that the Founding members (the 6 to 9 members mentioned) be named in the club charter as the founding members who will comprise the Board for at least the first period. Charter members would be those who joined after the founding members had created the club up to and including 7/7/7.

Yes, LSiS, 1 dues = 1 Member = 1 vote. Anything else creates a haves vs have nots. Funny thing is that Caterham is not Lotus 7 or a car inspired by Lotus 7. Nearn bought the Lotus 7 tooling, parts, and the design rights from Chapman, and continued making, and evolving, the same car. And really the only cars truely inspired by Lotus 7 are Birkin and Westfield, and they have the legal bills to prove it.

I would think a statemeent "restricted to Owners, past owners and future owners" would be sufficent to pass the "limited membership required" requirement. The membership could be stated to include all interested members of the immediate houshold who are 18 or older, but in elections 1 dues = 1 vote. I have held for a long time that "None of the above" should be a valid political statement. Think how long it would take in our national political situation how long it would take to get the next pres elected. locostv82006-08-25 07:05:57

Might I give a couple of thoughts. First I totaly agree to the LSiS theme with the only possible exception being show classes in all other cases a member is a member. Corvette grey beards have nothing on the Cobra faithful, look at http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/index.php sometime (original vs real vs clone vs replica vs kit vs scratch build (makes your head hurt)). http://www.msnusers.com/_Secure/0VAAAABkZ8R3DGG4fZt8LkSUf83I2fBcaoQGQwT3DxzHOaNLPS2ulkq0ody*EmtI1Mx8EpPwPVarCM3g%215v4MGd3e07N0lYkJk2CushyII8XooRUnTZ2PyK2MJXI7KwoW/RS06%20tuners%20GP.jpgdc=4675582586459856627" height="480" width="640 Then The DAX Rush - Car engine format(engine option 4cyl - V8s), is available in De Dion (main Price List), IRS & 4 x 4 (Quadra)(Price list supplement). All use Sierra 'running gear', the 4 x4 specifically uses Sierra Cosworth 4 x 4 'running gear' Might I suggest simply "Description - A Front-Mid engined car that is, or is inspired by, Colin Chapmans Lotus 7 which itself was post WWII British hill climb special." There could be verbage somewhere that if a car is in question the situation would be resolved on this website by a pole of the members. If there is an objection to a paticular car by a member it is submitted to the board. If the board agrees that there is a valid question then the member posts a description and pictures of the car and the membership votes over a 30 day period, a simple majority wins. A dues paying enthusiast member should be a dues paying member should be a member in all respects, 1 dues = 1 vote. State the names of the Charter members and that they are the board during the formative time period (12 mo?). To ensure that a member is serious there could/should be a statement that to be eligible to be elected to the board, past the formative period, they MUST have been a dues paying member for at least 1 dues period immediately prior to the election. The members will be smart enough not to vote in a poser. One of my pet theories is that there should be a box that says either none of the above or a negative vote for that person and a majoraty vote means just that for that election. locostv82006-08-25 00:08:20

Depending on how original you want the car to be a means of eliminating electrolysis and other nasty growth inside the tub and a means of eliminating the panel drum would be to do what I am going to do. Have the inside of the tub area Linexed, a coating of around .125 would better seal the panels to the frame tubes sealing the juncture from water penetration as well it should eliminate panel drumming and when you want no interior the car will still look finished. The pebble coating is a last step of the process and doesn’t have to be done. In my case I will have the entire tub sprayed inside and out since I will be using a steel skin. I would be very interested in your power coat results and a refference, a post in technical forum would be nice. locostv82006-08-24 23:12:40

Something I would like to pass on. I had to drill some 2" holes thru the winch mount push bar assy on my Crawler/Jeep/Truck/thingy and nearly took my arm off when the drill bit mounted in the hole saw broke. Not smart enough to evaluate the cause I replaced the drill bit and broke another within seconds. It is important that the locating piece of the hole saw be round smooth material, the shank of the drill or as I do now a smooth mandrel, not the flutes of a drill bit. The flutes will catch then bind and break leaving the hole saw running amuck.

[quote="locostv8" http://locostusa.com/forums/posting.php?mode=quote&p=7927 ]I just had a phone conversation with Jim Chamberlain at COVELAND MOTORSPORTS, INC. and reinterated that the posts weren't directed at his organization rather at Robin Hood. The sole intent is a heads up to a POSSIBLE problem that Robin Hood needs to address. If they have the data they need to provide it to Trev and if they don't they need to get it.

That is my thought. The problem seems that they have not been forthcoming. My further thought is that the US disstributor might be able to exert a bit more pressure than 1 customer. locostv82006-08-21 18:05:32

All of this occured in the UK. The RH light weight is being marketed in the US by Coveland so this posting is intended as a heads up. A structural defect would be just as much a problem in the US as in the UK. To my way of thinking at least the seat belt mount http://community.rhocar.org/index.php?showtopic=12786&st=120 item 123 is a defect. Items like rubber boots to cover bolt threads and edge covr to cover the louvers are the property of the builder but when basic structural design is failed it is time for the Manufacturer to step up though so far it seems they have been rather unavailable.
-
I don't have any technical knowledge but after reading an 11 page thread I thought a heads up might be in order since RH LW is sold in the US by Coveland. Also this might help the vendor to do the right thing by thier customer.

This is not my car, I have no connection to the builder or seller, this is only offered as information. Southampton SVA fails Robin Hood Lightweight for structural design. This morning I received the failure sheet through the post. I must stress there ARE some other failure points of my own silly doing - none major, and certainly nothing that a leisurely weekend pottering in the garage wouldn't rectify. Listed below are the structural failures. Copied exactly off the failure sheet with examiners notes in brackets FAILURE SECTION 5 A seat belt anchorage or the surrounding vehicle structure is of inadequate strength and likely to fail. (No box section in areas of seat belt mountings or associated component attachments, no triangulation or bracing of thin panels, pop rivets used near seat belt anchorage strengths.) FAILURE SECTION 15.1 When driven, the safe control of the vehicle is or is likely to be impaired due to design or construction feature or characteristic (Monocoque has absence of structural box section in construction) FAILURE SECTION 15.1 The vehicle structure is of inadequate strength and likely to fail prematurely. (vehicle construction not considered to withstand forces and vibration to which it is likely to be subjected to.) FAILURE SECTION 15.1 A suspension unit anchor, shackle or attachment bracket of inadequate strength and likely to fail prematurely. (All suspension components in box sections bonded and fixed with pop rivets and self tapping screws to main panels.) So there we have it. A chassis built to the letter following RHSC build DVD's, with this as a result.
