Caterham S3 and crossflow parts for sale
Sabbot replied to Sabbot's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
The engine is now sold, the other parts are still available. -
Due to too many other build projects (house, Elite and Impreza WRC) I have to admit that my days of seven ownership are over for the time being. Tidying up the garage I came across some Caterham and a lot of Lotus parts. Caterham / Seven parts are listed below with some pictures, and elan parts are on lotuselan.net. pm me for details, the parts are in San Diego but will ship within North America. Also, greetings to Croc and Kitkat and the NJ / PA / NY seven owners. I hope you are still having fun at NJMP etc. Parts for sale: Spare wheel and luggage carrier for S3 Caterham CV rebuild kits for Sierra differential driveshafts Front clamshell wing mounts for S3 Caterham 1700 Supersprint engine (rebuilt and in storage since dyno tuning) and 4 into 1 stainless headers and collector for S3 Caterham Radiator hoses for Crossflow in S3 Caterham LH Engine mount stay for S3 Caterham

My previous 1700cc Supersprint-powered S3 put out about 135bhp and could be peddled quite quickly on track or street. Admittedly no where near as quick as R500s etc. but no slouch either. The lighter engine of the 270S will lkely help the 0-60mph blat but the brick-like aerodynamics really start to make an impact above 100mph. Mine was geared to hit the rev limiter at 115mph, and with a following wind could get there so 122 is possible.

Oops - just realized I posted this in the wrong section.

Set of 4 Yokohama A-008R 185/60R13. Part worn but in good condition. Just trying to make space in garage. Thinking $120 for all, or make an offer. Location: San Diego

Hi All, Following the recent sale of my Caterham, with BD engine installed, I had the original Supersprint engine rebuilt. There was nothing wrong with it when last run but I wanted the new cam installed professionally. The engine was rebuilt by HDS engineering in Escondido CA. with new bearings throughout and a new Kent 234 cam, cam chain, tensioner, oil pump and gaskets. The cylinder head was not rebuilt, nor was the distributor and it is fitted with a set of 40DCOE carbs jetted for 1700cc engine but that will require dialing in. When dialed in it should be good for 125-135bhp The “testing the waters” part of the post is to see if anybody in the seven community would like to buy it. It will come complete with everything seen in the pictures and if there is interest i’ll have Bill Schlossnagel set up the carbs and run in the cam on his dyno. I also have a spare 6-bolt flywheel that can be supplied with the engine. I’m not desperate to get rid of it and am not going to sell headers etc. separately, but selling it would help justify purchasing a Katana 2 kit for the Elise. Send a PM or post questions if interested - thanks

I’ve been in touch and am slightly embarrassed to have sold a set of oil leaks (with a free Caterham thrown in for good measure), but this one at least should be straightforward to fix. My only worry with PTFE tape is that fragments might end up in the oil, but applied carefully should be fine. The original tank came from Dave Bean.

It enjoyed the SoCal sun for a while but it was great to see it go to a good home back in the north east, and hopefully will become a regular at local events. It also had an interesting, and similarly colored, stablemate during at least part of it’s journey east. Thanks to Jcerier, he was a wonderful person to deal with while selling the car.

A potential buyer requested pictures of the underside of my car, not having easy access to a 4 post lift my son helped me improvise. Haven't had the GoPro6 very long but love it's dynamic range, if not the sensitivity of the microphone that suggests the Lego dolly has a wheel bearing issue...;-) I thought the results weren't too bad so decided to post them.

Thanks Steve

Thanks Kitcat, I appreciate the compliments on the car. Hopefully the pricing is in the right ballpark, I'm hoping that it finds a new home and owner that will use it more often than I do these days.

Oops - correction: The wheels currently fitted are 13" rims all round, 6" width on front and 7" rears. The spare set are 15" rims.

After nearly eight years of ownership I’m finally getting my act together to sell my Caterham. An overview of the car is listed below. Given that I have two complete engines for the car and a bunch of spares there are at least three different purchase options: Option 1) Complete car plus spare wheels, wings etc. with BDA (currently fitted): Best offer around $34k Option 2) Complete car plus spare wheels, wings etc. with freshly rebuilt crossflow (will be fitted to the car): Best offer around $24k Option 3) Complete car plus both engines plus spares etc: Open to offers in excess of $34k I’m not intending to sell either engine or any of the spares until such times as the car is sold i.e. the buyer gets the first refusal on any of the options, but after that I may sell the other parts separately. I can’t post all of the pictures but will send a link to my google pictures folder to anybody who is interested. The car is located in San Diego Car overview 1998 Caterham S3 1700 Supersprint 40th Anniversary edition Titled in California as a 1965 Lotus 7 on a SB100 (a quirk of the original Connecticut bill of sale and New Jersey title) Recently ( The original 1700 supersprint (~135bhp) has just been rebuilt and comes complete with twin 40s, Aldon distributer, stainless steel headers and 4 into collector. Would like to advertise my Caterham here but can’t

Ah ha - apparently i’ve being overly “Scottish” - will renew my dues - thanks -
I'll echo Kitcat's comments in that when I swapped my 1700 super sprint (~130bhp)to a dry sump BDR (dyno @ 190bhp flywheel) the difference in driving was fun to say the least and above 7000rpm the sound is intoxicating. For anybody thinking about Craig's BDR. I started with a BDA and and had it rebuilt (with a new ford racing block) to the specification of Craig's and the rebuild alone cost more than Craig's asking price. With the exhaust and dry sump included the swap from Crossflow to BDR is very straightforward. For me the most difficult parts were mounting the oil cooler so that it didn't foul the nose and slightly trimming the passenger footwell to fit the dry sump tank, but even these were fairly straightforward fabrication jobs completed in a couple of half days.

Hi all, I just wanted to say huge thank you to all of you who have offered your kind words, thoughts, prayers and support. Colleen and I flew back from San Diego to Newark last Friday and I am now continuing my rehabilitation in the Kessler Institute rehab center in West Orange NJ, this center is about a 30 minute drive from our home and a lot easier for Colleen and our kids to visit. The staff in the rehab center in San Diego were terrific in initiating my recovery and training Colleen to help safely transport me back to NJ. United Airlines staff were incredibly accommodating which was a great help in my transit. I've included picture en route. The "passenger" in the window seat (which was thankfully blocked off by United) was a gift from colleagues in San Diego and came complete with some whiskey which I will unfortunately have to postpone tasting until I'm free of the majority of the current pain killers. My ultimate prognosis is still very much up in the air but as they say in the rehab centers they are "preparing me for the worst and hoping for the best", given that I have a little movement in my left leg I'm currently hoping for the best but will certainly prepare for the worst - only time will tell. Seven ownership, brings with it an incredibly supportive group of fellow enthusiasts and I am lucky enough to have been introduced them it by Mike (Croc) a few years ago; I doubt I'll be driving but there is just a chance that colleen and I will be able to visit the annual gathering at NJMP in July and it would be great to see many of you again in person. Once again huge thanks and very best wishes, Stewart

Dear all, Me again! Just to say thank you for for all the good wishes and support. Thank you Shane for the encouraging post and helping reassure me that recovery, while a long process, will happen. My latest news is I'm flying back to Ca on Monday with a view to training in transfers and care of Stewart so I can accompany him on his transfer to a hospital here in NJ. We are thrilled that he will be closer to home and hope that being minutes rather than a transcontinental flight away will be good for his morale. I'll be in touch as things progress. Thanks all Colleen

Dear all This is Colleen, posting on Stewart's login. Just to say thank you for all the good wishes and support. He is now settled into an Acute Rehab Unit in Encinitas where he will undergo some pretty intensive rehab. I am flying back to NJ tonight with the kids to get them back to school. We may not make the track day in July but we will be there in spirit. I'm not sure I'll be up for singlehandedly loading up the 7 and trailering it to South Jersey by then :-) I'll let you know how things progress, and thank you once again for the messages. Colleen Wife of Stewart and still waiting for the Elan......

Great road trip and video - thanks for posting. I'm reading this thread from San Diego and feeling very very home sick. One of my favorite fast blats in the highlands starts a little further south in Crianlarach and heads up Glencoe via the A82 to Glencoe village. Also if you have more time and good weather, the roads north of Ullapool are equally spectacular, generally pretty empty, excepting the odd sheep, the surfaces are pretty good and there are some stunning mountains and beaches to see along the way. Thanks again for for posting.

A few quick questions / clarifications ahead of this years 4th July NJMP event....yeah I know I ran a couple of years ago but increasing age and decreasing memory have their effects...........and i thought it might be good to generally clarify some of this Helmets: Snell 2010 onwards mandatory? Harnesses: in date FIA-compliant minimum 4 point fixing required for driver and passenger ( if taking an instructor)? exhaust / engine noise limit: none? Oil breather catch tank: not required or capacity? Glycol-based antifreeze in coolant: allowed? Arm restraints: Optional or mandatory? fire extinquisher: a good idea but not mandatory? windshield: optional? HANS device: optional? But after reading of xcarguy's exploits it seems like not a bad idea roll bar: required to be fixed for all opentops and should pass " broomstick test"? (I haven't seen this checked in tech inspection but maybe the inspectors assume if you drive a Caterham there's little of value above shoulder height.....) possible to register wife / significant other one the day to run your car in the green group: possible? thorough checking of nut and bolt tightness and condition of steering, driveline, suspention & brake components before the event: Assume you are riding a motorcycle at 120mph and then checking torque settings etc. make sense ability to be teased about almost any subject: remember to pack it What did I forget? cheers, stewart

Super7guy is spot on, the Belt Drive (BD) "R" conversion offered by Caterham was predominantly a head and piston conversion. Have a look at e the "BDR" kit on John Wilcox's site for a picture of all of the parts http://www.wilcoxengines.co.uk/bda_parts.htm My (sorry, my wife's) original BD was a standard 1600cc and in this spec and probably made around 140HP @ 6200rpm. Because it was a standard bottom end I set the rev limiter to 6400 and in this form it wasn't really very different to the crossflow that preceded it (1700 supersprint running a kent 234 cam). Last year I sent the BD off to Quicksilver to change the bottom end to all steel components, they also changed valves and retainers etc. but the cams remained unchanged. The brief was that I wanted somewhere around about 190-200bhp, to be tractactable to drive on the road on pump gas and to not need a rebuild every year with regular driving and a few track days. The layout and dyno sheet for the refreshed engine is shown. I've driven it less than 100 miles so far but it can easily driven around town at 30mph, it pulls strongly from 4000rpm and becomes reassuringly quick at >6000+. Over the winter I also changed the transmission to an E8 unit from BGH http://www.bghgeartech.co.uk/html/5_speed.html. BGH solve the long first gear issue of the type 9 box and the rest of the ratios are nicely matched to the power / torque band of the BD. Last, and probably least for most uses, the open backend was swapped out with a LSD from Titan. As mentioned I've only got about 100 miles on the combination but so far it seems fun in forward or side ways directions. Assuming I don't break something before the 4th of July I'll see a bunch of you at NJMP.

Stewart's (sabbot) long suffering wife: He keeps buying engines, I'm assuming one of them is going back in my élan this summer or I will just steal the 7....

I don't know if it will work for your needs but I have the original roll bar from my 1998 Caterham S3 (imperial chassis), languishing in my basement; see pictures. I doubt I will ever use it as I have fitted a taller bar with a diagonal brace. Let me know if it would be useful to you. Regards, Stewart
