Rescuing a DC-3 in Antarctica

I guess you can rebuild about anything anywhere.

A number of years ago I worked with another engineer that was on an expedition to recover a P-38.

They didn't fly it out. It was buried under many feet of ice. For fun they mounted a 20mm cannon off the plane on a snowmobile and did target practice. :smilielol5:

I had the great good fortune of occupying the hangar next to Glacier Girl at Oshkosh a few years ago. Got to taxi behind her too. A truly amazing and successful effort.

I was working in Thule Greenland when the Key Bird rescue was being attempted. I heard people talking about it at around the base, but I never meet any of the crew working on it. They would ferry parts from the base to the crash site. Several years later I saw the documentary about the rescue attempt. That had to be a heart breaking moment for that crew.
