coffee break Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I guess you can rebuild about anything anywhere. A number of years ago I worked with another engineer that was on an expedition to recover a P-38. http://p38assn.org/glaciergirl/recovery.htm They didn't fly it out. It was buried under many feet of ice. For fun they mounted a 20mm cannon off the plane on a snowmobile and did target practice. :smilielol5:
WestTexasS2K Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Thats amazing. I would of thought that plane was doomed to a icy grave. I would have never guessed they could get it out ever much less in 44 days. That is talented group of folks there.
Off Road SHO Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I wish other benefactors would step up and go get the rest of the squadron. Tom
scannon Posted March 4, 2015 Author Posted March 4, 2015 There have been quite a lot of these types of rescues. Here's one that ended in tragedy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpR2S_gu5I8

Got to taxi behind her too. A truly amazing and successful effort.
WestTexasS2K Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I was working in Thule Greenland when the Key Bird rescue was being attempted. I heard people talking about it at around the base, but I never meet any of the crew working on it. They would ferry parts from the base to the crash site. Several years later I saw the documentary about the rescue attempt. That had to be a heart breaking moment for that crew.
