coffee break
I had a front end vibration around 55 to 60 MPH, but it wasn't consistent. I pulled on the front wheels, top & bottom and got a clunk as if the bearing may be loose. How do I remove the dust cap to check the bearings out? I think the spindles are Triumph Spitfire. scannon
That cap looks like it should just be pried out with a thin blade screwdriver.
TheDingo8MyBaby
I would advise against the screwdriver method. Chances are you'll wind up with a bent dust cover. Instead, find a self tapping screw with the ID approximately the OD of that hole and have a go. Keep in mind the bearings should have a SMALL amount of play to them. If they have no play, they're likely too tight.
slomove
Since it has that hole already, can you pop it off with compressed air? I removed the dust caps off my trailer hubs a while ago and it drove me nuts. Half an hour with hammer, screwdrivers, pipe pliers etc. The caps were toast but cheap to replace. Sean
This issue has confronted owners for at least fifteen years now... here
coffee break
I tried the sheetmetal screw and ended up with a larger hole. So, with a long screw driver and a BFH I was able to remove the cap. Bonus, it came off without too many dings. Good to go. Thanks for the input. scannon
Never use force, just get a bigger hammer.:smash:
James A
If you track or autocross your car with sticky tires on you should consider upgrading the front axel form the stock Spitfire, I have seen two break! One at high speed on a track and the front wheel went flying!
DeanG
There is a plier like tool that helps get the cap off. Cheaper to buy extra caps.
