230 HP from 2L zetec

James A had asked this question at the end of another thread. Brought into a new thread.

Can you tell us a little more about the engine and the build details that yield 230 hp from a 2.0 Zetec?

Guess that since crower makes stage 4 cams for the zetec, high HP is possible, just not very driveable.

Michael once said that the Quicksilver zetec was 215 HP

Anyone have actual postable numbers?

thanks, Wayne

The challenge of the dyno Grand prix is the variability of results from dyno to dyno. For instance, my 170hp Zetec SVT (at the crank) can keep up with MichaelD's 215 hp Zetec on the straight at Lightening at NJMP. We both have drag-inducing full cages, so I dont have an aero advantage (tho he does sport claims while I have cycle fenders). I'd estimate we mite enter at 100 mph, and end up at 120 mph and it is a pure horsepower contest.

Mike - That's 13% taller than mine 175 Hp x 1.13 = 198 Hp. Add in the cycle fender aero advantage and I guess that explains it.

If KitCat Mike has a taller tire, he has *less* effective wheel torque than you, everything else being equal. And KitCat has a substantial (for a Caterham) cage in that car. Truthfully, there are too many variables between these two cars to draw a conclusion.

If it's still the engine we put in that car, KitCat's Seven will run 1:57s at Thunderhill, with bypass.

Cheers,

-Bruce

Same engine Bruce, tho currently undergoing a mild rebuild as compression was low. My original point was that perhaps MichaelD's dyno # was optimistic?

Back on topic, I think Massive Speed System has aftermarket Zetec parts including everything needed for a significant increase in power (tho not cheap).

Another route would be to put a turbo on the Zetec? Again not cheap.

I have a Massive head with stage II cams and am extremely happy with the output. Haven't measured it on a dyne yet though.

My original inquiry was one along the lines of what exactly a 230hp Zetec engine build is composed of? I am guessing, individual throttle bodies, I know some higher lift and duration cams (but which ones?), significant head porting, maybe 11:1 compression, bigger valves. I was just very curious how you get 230hp from a Zetec.

With that and otherwise stock parts you may get 170-180 at the wheels (~210 crank?). That is at least what I got from my deceased silvertop Zetec and similar modifications: FZ2002 11mm lift Kent cams&springs (comparable to Focus12 cams for the ZX3 Zetec), ported but not bigger valves, ITB, 10.6 compression) measured on a precision hub dyno.

To get more you may need forged guts and a billet oil pump so that you can rev it to 8krpm or more. I would not try that with stock pistons, rods, etc. Even more radical cams (require piston modifications) may help, too.

  • 3 months later...

Just got dyno results back on my totally stock SVT Zetec engine. I make 161 hp, 141 torque. Much help from 1turbofocus. No ITB's, no header, no hot cam, i run a stock airbox and filter, etc. If it is also reliable power I will be a happy camper.
