Seriously considering 7 purchase this weekend- any advice?

One more thing- Those Yoko RA32's (now discontinued and replaced by the A048) are great tires in the dry- they come in 3 compounds designated S M and H- the S or M is a must for this car, the H compound never gets enough heat in to get grippy and they are downright scary when cold.

OH- and they all SUCK in the rain- you might as well have slicks on.

And on more of a personal taste note- ditch those Alfa mags on e-bay- dated 80's styling at it's best (or worse)

A beautiful set of Panasports (which I can provide you with at a very reasonable cost ;) ) will always look timeless.

Yeah, not the cars best feature, but the full size spare is kinda cool ;-)

4X108 bolt pattern from the Alfa is a bit odd... scary that I went to tire rack to check out the options for rims put in 1978 Alfa spider and the 'rims' button went light grey (unclickable).

 

Panasports come in a 4X108 bolt pattern?

 

I wonder if that's worth drilling out some 4X100 bolt holes on the hubs and hammering in studs in a more normalish pattern?

 

Maybe that's why the alfa rims are still on it.

Cell phone, triple A card, build manual, as many essential tools as you can pack. Contrary to informed advice, I drove my '97 Caterham back from NJ (800 miles) no problems. Big deal I thought.

 

Then after I got it home, a coolant line sprung a leak & shorted out the electrics, necessitating a tow, the throttle linkage broke and the ignition developed a short so sometimes its starts, some times it doesn't.

 

Guess I dodged a bullet (or two).

The car looks nice! There are a couple if things you might want to do before pulling the trigger. First, I would check with your state’s vehicle licensing department to make sure there are no issues bringing the car into GA. Although it is registered in FL, that doesn’t mean much beyond that state’s borders. This is something I discovered when I brought my CA registered Westfield into WA.

 

Second, I would go to the Locost (here and here) and Grassroots Motorsports forums (he has a GRM sticker on the car) to see if you can find any posts by the seller. You might uncover some problems he’s experienced, or find out that he did a great job building the car.

Along with the lucky socks, take a narrow pair of driving shoes. When I went to test drive my Birkin, I had to drive barefoot because the street shoes I was wearing were too wide, catching the brake pedal whenever I pushed the accelerator. Don't know about the Locost pedal box though, it could be wider than the Birkin's.

You guys and your problems with the pedal boxes...in my narrow bodied Cat I can drive with workboots on!

 

Although...I did receive a pair of these for my birthday (belatedly, otherwise I would have matched Dino T.!):
