R 500 change from BOB STARTER to Key or Push Button.

Hello tech guys. Redgoose here with my R500 with original bob starter set up. It's giving me a hard time so I would like to change to conventional setup. My mechanic will do it, but we need guidence. Anyone with knowledge of this situation ? Please help.

Hi Ron, Hope you are well, we've missed you at our 7s Gatherings at NJMP. You were one of the original 6. Time to get back on the track with us. I've been searching the Blatchat archives as I know there was a diagram there, but it seems their archives are not working well for the older links. Here is a description that I pulled off one of the threads. It looks like it is for a toggle switch for power and then the button to start the car. Hope this helps. Tom

 

Flip switch and starter button now installed and working a treat ! . Wiring is as follows : remove black shroud around ignition switch ( warning this is the point of no return as at cannot be refitted ), on the rear of the ignition unit are 3 male connections marked as 50 , 30 & 15 50 = Red / white wire ( Starter motor signal ) 30 = 2 brown ( Constant live ) 15 = 2 white + 1 red ( ignition on/off ) Add 2 feeds from brown wires 30 . connect ignition flip switch to wires from 15 & 30 . connect starter button to wires from 50 & 30 . reconnect battery / master switch . Flip your switch , press your button and Vrooom ! Jobs a good un ! Now the difficut bit..... where on the dash do I mount them ?? Time taken = 30 mins . Hope you are doing well? Just to check, a bob starter is some type of key fob thing which you press a button to either immobilize or de-immobilize the ignition system? Or is it a remote starter? I am trying to understand whether its the immobilizer that is giving trouble or if it is the actual key ignition system itself.

 

If it is the immobilizer key fob you wish to remove then that is not going to be solved by what Tom has suggested as we need to find the immobilizer box and remove it from the wiring. Is there any brand on that key fob? Have you tried replacing the battery inside? There is a lot of information on blatchat about this topic but we need a little more information from you to clarify.

On my 05 Ford Expedition the key fob had to be within 5 feet of a special relay that was in the relay box. This special relay has a white dot on it to distinguish it from the factory relay. The factory relay was left in the glove compartment.

Hello to all, yes I have been lax in my Caterham ventures, but this year will be different. I hopefully will attend this years gathering if I return from my 3 month journey to the west coast in one piece. Trailering the Caterham and motorcycle to L.A. to spend 2 months riding the canyons and maybe Leguna Seca. Hope all is well with everyone. Thanks for the replies. The fob has the name __sterling--- on it and it does not seem to come apart. I have to move the fob around the box to make a connection. Hard to find the right spot after the car has run a while, then turned off.

Consensus fix seems to be unwind the aerial around the steering column/barrel to allow the immobilizer fob touch the end of it.
