Brakes and Mufflers

It's been a while, so I'll have to recap my car situation.

former Brunton Stalker V6, #48 to be exact. I have a friend of a friend doing an S2000 swap into it, which is why I posted this.

What do the WCM or 4cyl cater ham guys use for exhaust? Bike exhaust?

Also, the engine is mounted pretty far back, giving a beautiful shifter location and weight distribution. What the heck do I do for brakes? It has manual brakes now, and that is a big no for the track. I am semi-familiar with hydroboost systems, as I don't think a brake booster will fit. What do you guys use and what might be some options? I also have to do a drum to disc conversion on the rears.

I have a 2005 Ultralite with over 2000 track miles, and have Wilwood master cylinders, calipers, rotors and pads no boost and I can out brake most of the cars I run with, no fade, no lockup for 20 to 25 minute sessions in intermediate and advanced hpde classes. My opinion it would just add weight and something else to go wrong, always apply the KISS method.

I have no idea why anyone would want a servo brakes. I am running dual Wilwood master, peddle is firm, I did go to softer pads to get more feel. Effort is not noticeably different from any other car I have driven. Because you can change the front and rear master individually you can get exactly the pressure and feel you want.

Sorry I did not answer the muffler question. I have a Honda K24A2 power car, so the engine is similar. My first exhaust was a 3" resonator followed by a 3" muffler. It was brain rattling loud, screw the ear plugs in as far as you can, on the street you were driving all the time to reduce noise, it was obnoxious. So a re-design over the winter. I added a Vortex cone before the muffler and a SuperTrap tip. I put 14 disks in the SuperTrap. Wow what a difference, the car is actually very quiet, I am amazed, I am super happy.

From what I am seeing, thus far, I might be able to get a decent brake setup without power brakes. It just looks like I will need a more thought-out system design to get a better effort-to-stop ratio.

I have a 2004 Ultralite kit with the Honda S2000 engine and transmission. 12" Willwoods all around, Willwood master cylinders, Dynalite calipers. The 12" rears are too big, so I had to add a pressure bias valve. A better approach would be to alter the rear master cylinder size.

I don't know what the muffler is, it came with the kit, as well as the headers and pipe, which were all custom made for the Ultralite. I ordered it with the catalytic converter, so I could run the factory O2 sensors and computer, all Jet Hot coated. It is fine for street driving, and is pretty loud when you really get on it, and I do not know if it would meet all track noise requirements, The times I tracked it there were no sound checks.

Manual brakes will work just fine for any 7 in my opinion. Heck we even took the boosted brakes off of the BMW lemons race car and put a manual set up on it and it works great as long as the master cylinder doesnt blow seals. As far as headers go it will most likely require a custom set built to fit the car. Mufflers are available from many manufactures. Round style most popular. I wouldnt go over 2.5 the larger the pipe the louder it tends to get. Noise on the Honda is intense when your hammer it so a resonator before the muffler can help reduce the noise.

This is a good article on exhaust systems: http://www.turnology.com/features/performance-exhaust-system-design-and-theory/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=performance-exhaust-system-design-and-theory&utm_source=May+2016&utm_campaign=Harley+NhB+Press+Release&utm_medium=email

My car has a custom system from Burns, the folks who wrote the article. It is very quiet, but can be varied by how much stainless steel wool it is packed with.

Thanks. I might consider manual brakes, just with a serious upgrade from what it has on it.

exhaust..... Yeah I need something. The glass packs on the Stalker cammed V6 was a real killer to my ears. That didn't stop me from stepping on it though.

I run a Westfield with an S2000 engine an trans and it's wonderful. I see zero reason to go with boosted brakes on your car. Size the masters right and it will be great. My car has dual masters with a bias bar and of course no booster and the pedal is firm and high and the power and modulation is perfect.

As for exhaust - I'm wondering if the Westfield S2000 header might work for you. It of course bolts right up to the Honda engine and comes out the side at a good angle for a seven. I wonder if maybe you could use the entire system - header, second pipe and muffler? Something to consider.

For the muffler you might consider these people: http://www.coastfab.com/ultra-lightweight-racing-mufflers.html I can tell you they are not cheap but you can tell them the ends you want on the muffler, the space available for the muffler and the db you want coming out of the muffler and they will make it. Obviously there are some limitations, but we had one made for our EP race car and they delivered exactly what we needed. And their mufflers are very light weight, 304 stainless and repackable. I drew a hand sketch with dimensions, they sent back a drawing with estimate and it was here in three weeks. Ours cost $645 but if you can use a standard design they are much less expensive.
