Seemed kind of like back-handed compliments to me, in the context of the article.

My impression is that the writer was very proud of himself for being able to handle an Academy car, but was in too deep with the 620.

You either are into the elemental sports car experience or you're not, no amount of car preparation or support is going get someone to change their mind. Sam Smith is someone who gets it, that's why he used to own a Caterham and a Lotus Elan. The wheels could have fallen off and he would have put a positive spin on it :p
