That the Caterham 620R is on of the 13 best new cars today for under $100K. Per, today's e-mail blast of their newsletter. Hey R&T, how's about a big track-day comparo of all 13 so we can see where it stacks up against the Z06, etc. (The shorter the track the better:)).

It's theoretically possible, based on Superformance's last price list I have. Zero options have you at about $93K. But - that's no weather-gear, paint, etc. Usually, these cars would be highly optioned, putting the price over $100K. That F1 paint scheme was a $5400 option.

Well, I learned something new. I thought they were $110-115k. And I suppose it would be if I was buying and I found the option list. I like options! :rofl:

Isn't it great what mass production can do for pricing. The "7" may be a lot of car performance wise but sit it next to a new Z06 and it's hard to see where the cars stack up for what you get dollar per dollar wise. I love my 7 but I'd be hard pressed to shovel out $100K+ for one, even one that good. On the other hand, you can get a lot of used "7" for the money if your willing to wait and know what to look for.

If only car buying were a rational experience:). Have you seen how much people are paying for Porsche 356's these days? Six figures for nice examples that a Honda Fit would embarrass at the track. (In addition to more reliability, functionality, gas mileage, etc.). But the high Caterham prices have nonetheless undoubtedly squeezed sales. Until production moves to China, it will likely stay that way.

Agree 100%. But that line about moving to China scares me - perish the thought! That would be the death knell for Caterham.

 

I have no experience with the 620R, but I damn well know (like everybody else here) that it is one HELL of a lot of car performance-wise. What one might pay for it is up to the individual, but I agree with R&T on this one, even if I'm not sure if they are actually under $100K or not.

 

Still curious to know if drivetrain is included in base price. Historically it was not, at least not in California, as the law here stipulates (or used to?) that the engine and gearbox must be purchased from a separate entity than the chassis. But that may have changed; I haven't been concerned with this for a few years now. I may look at a new kit in a few years to enjoy the build experience with my son (not a 620 R!), so curious if pricing model has changed.

That price includes the separately purchased power-train.
