Knock sensing Help!!!

I finally had the work on the orange Caterham completed and have done a 2 hour session with the UK tuner, where he took control of my computer and reviewed the software update and new map that I had loaded from him. It was mostly a test of the software connections prior to the dyno session, but he was able to walk me thru what he was looking at and he used the wide band O2 sensor I installed to look at the data and make some minor adjustments.

 

After 2 hours he pronounce it good to go and gave me a date that he's available to do the remote tuning. The one thing he wanted me to find out from the dyno shop was how they were going to sense any knock, as he wouldn't be in the shop to hear what was going on.

 

The 2.3L Cosworth does not have a knock sensor nor is the MBE ECU capable of accepting one.

 

So anyone have any ideas how to listen for or sense any knocking/detonation while revving the nuts off the car on the dyno?

 

I found a Ford Knock sensor but have no way of connecting it to get a signal or any information and the dyno guy is not familiar with how to make it work with his computer.

 

I found a You tube video that shows how to connect to a multimeter and was wondering if anyone thinks this could work.

 

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The Dyno time is scheduled for Wednesday morning next week.. :willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly: Tom

On the 2.3, the knock sensor fits with a 10mm bolt (?) to a threaded boss below the induction system and just above the crankcase vent housing between #2 and #3. I have a stock sensor that I can send you as the Typhoon ECU that I am using doesn't utilize it.

Thanks for the offer. I had picked up a ford 2.3L knock sensor, but unfortunately, the one I have has a smaller hole in the center of it, a M8 bolt fits the M10 is too big. I see a bunch of M10 sized threaded bosses, but I did find one that I believe the M8 bolt will fit, but it has been shaved down and I can only see about 3 threads in the hole. Hopefully that will be enough to hold it for the dyno runs. Any Idea how I can hook up the two wires, One Red and one White, to a multimeter in order to see if any signal is sent if it senses Knock/noise in the specified Range?

A buddy with some decent electrical knowledge came over yesterday and we attached the sensor to the M8 hole. The red wire from the sensor is connected to the Positive post on the Multi meter and the White wire is connected to the negative battery post. With the Meter on AC Volts, I'm hoping we see a signal if there is any knocking in the range the sensor is set for. Wish me luck. Tom

It isnt that easy , The knock sensor works in Frequency converted to voltage through the ECU , each SVT / Zetec / Duratec engine has a specific location the knock sensor has to be placed to run with the stock ECU with a lot of time spent on the sensitivity settings for each Cyl so it isnt indicating false knock , I know you have MBE which makes it worse

 

You cant just place a KS on and engine and watch voltage and tell if its 1 Cly knocking or 4 , if its knock from other things on the engine making noise or its its actual pre ignition

 

You would be far better off to find a tuner/dyno that is use to doing engines with no knock sensor , there is still a few of us around that had to tune cars pre knock sensor era and know how to do it safely
