... why I can't have one?

I understand the WHOLE idea of not allowing new non-Federal cars here, but if a 270 chassis with an owner-added Sigma engine, (which to my knowledge isn't in any NA cars) can be made legal, why not the 160?

thx

Hmmm, 180+ views and not a single answer, not even an opinion expressed?

Is the question that complex, or just that daft? :-)

Low take rate, so don't bother offering it in North America? Desire to keep prices up by offering bigger displacement, higher horsepower engines? Don't really know why.

One reason is the Suzuki engine. They are not available here and Suzuki stopped selling cars here a few years ago. Since you cannot bring one in with an engine and you can't buy that engine here Caterham chooses to not sell it here.

You can get nearly the same car (Caterham 140) here set up for the Ford Sigma engine which is available from your Local Ford dealer. This one lives in the Denver area and cost a little over $40k turnkey:

Thx, wasn't aware the Sigma was considered local.

Curious about the 40k turnkey, as Caterham seems to publish 40k plus engine plus tranny plus windshield.

(That green one from Marshall&Goldman that frequents ebay had my attention until they told me it was titled as a "1957 Caterham". I've had my fill of going to the DMV with fingers crossed for one lifetime) :-)

IIRC this car came from Jon Nelson here in Denver. I don't remember the exact price, it could have been a bit more.

On the 160 - I was told that Suzuki asked Caterham to not offer the vehicle in the USA with their engine, based on the issue outlined by Skip.

If you are interested in a new Seven, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the current affordability. Contact me privately, and we can take it from there.

As an aside, when the 160 was announced (and given the history between Caterham and Ford), I was quite surprised they didn't use the 1.0 Turbo in the current Fiesta.

After driving a heavy ass Ford Edge with the 2.0 turbo, I am seriously lusting after one of those engines for my Seven. It moved that heavy Edge from nought to 60 in about 6 seconds! (Butt Timing)

The 1 litre 3 pot engine is too tall to fit in a Caterham without a bonnet bulge. Ford tried to get Westfield to use the engine, but it was so much more expensive than Zetec engines, which can still be picked up for a song in the UK
