Caterham HPC

I recently purchased a 1992 Caterham HPC with the 2.0 Vauxhall twin cam engine. Can anyone help with which oil filter this engine uses and where it can be obtained in the US. Also, what weight oil should I be using and is a synthetic good? I live in Arizona...cool in winter, very hot in summer. Thanks, Wayne

Welcome to the forum! I can not offer any help with your motor but pictures would be nice to see.

I'm sure someone else will reply with part number suggestions.

What a coincidence - I'll be getting a '93 HPC in April so I don't actually have the car yet. The copius paperwork that the owner passed onto me shows that it will be different with dry sump or wet, and possibly whether an oil cooler is installed or not. There is a short one and a longer one. The part numbers that he has written down are Wix WL7064, Fram PH2874, and AC/delco PF53 AC.

I would check what is on now and match that to be safe.

Thanks everyone for the help....I've managed to change the oil and used a Fram PH8170 filter and Mobil One 0-40. Oil pressure seems just fine. Napa dealer also sold me a Napa Gold #7035 which is their interchange for a WIX WL 7064. Life is good!

I have a '94 HPC.

One of the best filters you can use is Mobil 1 M1-102.

Your oil choice is pretty good although a bit on the heavy side. This is because the Catetham bespoke aluminium sump is heavily finned which keeps the oil temp's on the low side for anything other than track use.

On the street you'll be hard pressed to get your oil temp's over 80C even on a hot summer day.

As a result I and other HPC owners have found you can easily maintain oil pressure running a 0W-20 on the street

and a 0W-30 or 5W-30 for track day use.

 

The recommended hot oil pressure is 4.4-5.7 bar at 4,500 rpm. The maximum OP is about 6.2 bar which you should be able to reach at elevated rev's with a cold engine. It's not uncommon on what is now an old engine for the OP sensor to become faulty and not allow the maxmum 6.2 bar reading on the oil gauge and therefore making the gauge inaccurate. Just something to be aware of.

 

If you hot OP doesn't drop to at least 5 bar you can drain off some of the M1 0W-40 and add some 0W-20. The Mobil made Toyota brand 0W-20, one of the best 0W-20s available.

On another forum I made this resulting 0W-30 blend well known as the CATERHAM blend.
