Daytona Track Day 420R

Here's some video from the Daytona Road Course last weekend...

The spastic blip shifts were due to a poorly conceived and made last minute mod to the gas pedal - I slid a PVC tube in the circle bit of the pedal with the intention of making it easier to rotate the foot onto the gas when braking. Unfortunately it was too much and every time I braked, I also pressed down some on the gas as you can see from the green bar on the video. A complete failure, I really need to do something properly over the winter break. Anyways, the rest of the car was great, the hoosier slicks were amazing and the track was a hoot to drive, would recommend if you get a chance. Enjoy!

Well, that was exciting!

If I were a Caterham dealer, I'd ask your permission to link my Website to this video. It could tip a few undecided buyers off the fence:Top speed 130 mph, cornering at 1.5'G's, see ya 'Vette, McClaren, etc.

Only the hugely winged Porsche 911 (GT3?, GTS?) was able to stay ahead of you, and that was by virtue of massive top speed (160 mph???).

And what great track! I just added it to my bucket list and never would have thought of it.

Some pretty good driving too:can you say "quick hands"? And you were really climbing the curbs and straightening out the track. Without knowing, I have to guess you have some competition driving experience?

That was great driving by sf4018. He really showed why it is a special track experience.

The plastic tube in the accelerator trick does not work. Tried and failed that one myself!

The Daytona track has been on my wish list ever since I visited the Historics event there. Its spectacular. The problem is that its at least a 16 hour drive and if I go then I would want to take the Caterham and the BMW CSL. I want to replicate the 1978 photo on the banking - that was the goal I set in 2015 to signify the end of the restoration. Assuming all the winter projects play out as I hope then 2021 may be a go since there will be no international travel in 2021 until late in the year (at the earliest).

Oh and I also forgot to ask, what was tire wear like at the end of the event. Curious how the banking impacted it.

These are the fronts, picked up tons of clag I guess on the pit entry, they are quite a mess! The outsides of both left and right have more wear, but I think that's more to do with the setup not being quite right, maybe not enough camber or too much toe out. They were 20psi before the stint, the right sides were about 1.5psi higher at the end so there must be more wear for the rights but I can't see it by eyeballing. I'm guessing they'll manage one more weekend, they are a pretty soft compound - R35.

I think the banking did eat up the right hand side. Smooth edge grain plus extra right hand side wear on both is indicative of scrub which is what I was expecting to see. Reverse them over and you may even get 2 more days out of them!

I think you're right, also it looks like what I thought was clag seems to be rubber from the right side of the tires that have accumulated, the lines are suspiciously straight and uniform. If that's the case do you think any setup like the camber needs to change? I'm not really clued in to setups yet.

Yes - it reminded me of what I do to my tires on NJMP Lightning Circuit and that only has a 15 deg banking although you scrub more as it is tighter.

I would not change set up for just one track day. Your Caterham clearly handles well at Barber based on the video and I guess you are at regular circuits pretty regularly while Daytona might be once or twice a year. On balance I would live with it if I were you. Just accept you will get faster wear. I just rotate the tires side to side to balance out the wear.
