Unusual take on a Caterham by an owner in Singapore

Recommended Posts

Ten years ago I was told by the Caterham dealer in Singapore that you could not register a Caterham for on road driving in Singapore as the Singapore Government did not allow kit cars.  So most customers bought for track days in Malaysia (the closest tracks are there) or registered in Malaysia.   Wonder if that dealer finally got the rules changed to allow local registration.

Mind you, those photos are likely of the most expensive Caterham in the world.  A base model VW Golf costs US$110,000 to get on the road in Singapore and that includes the price for a 10 year Certificate of Entitlement to drive.  A middle of the range Toyota Corolla is US$135,000.  My math says thats a half-million dollar+ Caterham we are looking at above.

I believe it.

It's a CSR 200 too

Here is before the wrap (note speakers and deck already in)

And here are a few quick clips after the wrap

It has a pretty rare red interior trim such as center arm rest etc

I even know where that video is taken - outside the Conrad Hotel in the Marina District of Singapore.  Prior to COVID I would spend 2 weeks a year in that hotel for work.

Singapore has to be one of the worst places on earth for a Caterham.  Swelteringly humid.  Only 30 minutes before your next thunderstorm.  All built up urban areas with traffic lights everywhere.  Not a decent twisty road on the island.  And that little jaunt around the Marina district probably cost him $7 in congestion pricing area tolls.  The tolling device is that box thing on the windscreen.

Amazing. Thanks for the contest. That owner is clearly dedicated to the experience.

If Caterham is so astronomical there, how about all the other supercars/exotics?

Similarly nose bleed expensive.  Rule of thumb is 4 to 5 times the price it would cost in the USA.

I'm certainly a big fan of 7s with red interiors. Mine, for example.

I lived there in the mid-70s for a while. Not nearly as insane on the costs but private cars were clearly only for the affluent. With so few and such narrow roads, it’s clear why the taxation is so high. Even then, I was provided with a chauffeur driven car for work and compensated for my taxi usage as a disincentive to leasing a car.
