Vinman1 Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 Scoticus, I have gone through quite a bit to get the drum brake set up on my Ford axle. The brake backing plates are 9" from a Mercury Capri 4 cyl. The drums are Cortina MKII GT (9"x2") The wheel cylinders are stock 71 Capri ones. Most of the stuff is Cortina and lots of Capri Stuff is the same. Go to motomobiles web site, lots of info there for reference, but I got the same ones at Rock Auto. I don't know what the original back plates were on a Ford axle Seven, still would like to. MV8 Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 (edited) Pic illustrates my point I made (in Vinman1's other brake topic) on interchangeability of brake systems. Here is the other 9 inch cortina GT brake system around the same time. Note the difference in the outside edge of the backing plate which must match the drum but otherwise, interchangeable. A few mfgs were switching to a more rigid, rolled edge backing plate at the time requiring the drum design change. Edited March 16, 2023 by MV8
IamScotticus Posted March 16, 2023 Author Posted March 16, 2023 (edited) Thanks Vin Heres mine I don't have an adjuster on the cylinder, its up top and manually adjusted with a square key. I also confirmed this to be A Marina, not an Ital, although Cat says its an Ital. The hub locating key is 3/16", not 1/4"square. Where some have gotten into trouble on these is fitting Ital hubs on Marina shafts giving the Ital hub 1/16" of space to move in. Fortunate to not have this issue. If buying shafts from MOSS or Rimmer Bros one must check this. Edited August 4, 2023 by IamScotticus

The emergency brake slot on one end of the plate has a tab retained by a funny-looking, triangle-shaped spring. FWIW, my wheel cylinders are 3/4 thanks, steve

They supplied the axles to Caterham back then. And there's Skip Harris "The Marina Man" marinaman@marinaman.org. He should know how to get them if anyone. I would say early TR 7 4spd shoes would work but the more I look into the TR7s axles, the more minor differences I find, so I'm not sure about that. It's interesting, Caterham has always written in the build manuals that the axles are Itals, but the narrower hub keys are Marinas', and probably the cylinders too. In my twenty's I had a '66 E-Type (DON'T even think about yelling, I know I shoulda kept it), and needed a fuel pump. Looked in the JC Whitney catalog, the same p/n for a 66 Jag fuel pump was called out for a Healey 3000. I went to the same Lancaster CountY Motors dealer mentioned in the article (they sold Healey's) and asked for a fuel pump for a '66 Jag. They told me they don't sell Jag parts, so I asked them to sell me a 3000 Healey fuel pump. They reluctantly did...worked like a charm. Now they sell Mercedes (always did), and Suburus. Nothing from the UK
