HPC Vauxhall red top 2l muffler/silencer

My Vaux 7 runs great but is loud...the muffler is on the driver side and the car has 19k miles on it (98 build)....ear plug loud.  Can't locate a 7 source for them so has anyone found a suitable replacement or done repacking?

How about some close pics of the ends? Do you have the heat shield that hides the muffler? Is it riveted together or welded? Pipe diameters and muffler length? It can be repacked or replaced. Covered/hidden allows a standard, quieter muffler to be fitted.

Pipe od in and out, case od and length, and if inlet or outlet is  offset from center.

Inlet pipe from header 2.1 in exterior.  Entry and exit pipe centered.  Overall length 27.5 in.  Diameter 5"....circumference 16 approx.

It depends on how much work you can do. The inlet appears to not be parallel to the case. Here are some mufflers that could be adapted (should have a cover as they are not made to be pretty/smooth) or you can import one that is a direct fit. If you'd like to repack and don't mind a little fab, the case could be cut about an inch from the end, a strip of .050" or so sheet about 1.5 inches wide can be rolled to fit half way in to the forward case, the case drilled for a few spot welds to hold it in place, then the cap added, outlet correctly clocked, then a few #10x3/8 or so pan head sheet metal screws added to hold it on. Touch up with flat exhaust or barbecue paint to hide the serviceability. Packing material is common.

 

Metal supermarkets is one place you can buy sheet metal in these thickness cut to the size you need. I bought some at my local shop yesterday for a continuous cement mixer I am building because I didn't have time to get a truck to pickup a full sheet at my normal supplier. You can almost bend the metal by hand but it is easier to use the pipe and body to get the right shape. I don't think any of the direct fit replacements will be as quiet as your repacking or using an ugly oem type.

Thanks we've been looking at the same stuff.... the inlet is centered but offset...the outlet isn't really an issue.  Ugly OEM in flat black isn't bad and I'm looking at the Walkers. 

An offset inlet on a 6 in wide would work to as it could be clocked and might eliminate that angled intake issue altogether.

I use 'stovebright' paint for exhaust headers...works great.

summit racing has a very good filter for narrowing the mufflers to what you need. Their prices for walkers are usually the best but shipping is the kicker.

My problem with these can shape mufflers is if the lip is lower than the chassis one is at risk of it getting caught and ripping off.  This is what happened to me. The muffler also took the rear fender (wing 🇬🇧) off. Stupid mistake I made I will try to not repeat with a can too low.  Currently exploring motorcycle mufflers as many are smaller 1.75" for 1600 Xflow.

Ouch...many of the Walkers inlets are offset so that would allow you to clock the muffler higher than normal...that could alleviate that issue.

Another wheel reinvention I have is to run a 4-2 dual internal baffled straight pipes all the way back, or to two very narrow cigar glass packs and dual tips.  It's not proper 7, its Shelby Daytona.

Ditto on the reclocked offset for improved GC.

 

Could also eliminate the muffler from the side and run only a rear transverse oval/turbo style. Cat sells the full length system or you can have it put together from mandel bent ss and the muffler(s) of your choice. Just getting the outlet behind the car should help. There was someone here who recently posted that they wanted to get rid of the full length system on their new car.

Xflow full length Cats traditionally used a left wing that was made higher on the bottom edge to allow the exhaust to pass under. The only reason I'm going with a side tip now is because the replacement wing I have doesn't have the clearance. I would rather not cut a hole.  We shall see how it goes.  I may find ear muffs sufficient.

I use the cheap foam earplugs from HF    I tried a set of muffs, but not as good. My muffs seem to be biased toward higher freqs, not so good down low

I don't use them around town, but more than 10 miles on the highway I have them in

Looks fine but I'd go longer...I want to do away with the ear plugs altogether.  Presently hang a set on the rear view mirror.  20/25 inches.... I may repack the original and give that a shot.

In regard to repacking, if the muffler uses a continuous center pipe attached at both ends (like a glass pack muffler), then you'll need to cut that as well to separate the two ends for access to repack. I would cut at the middle instead of near the end, cap one or both of the cut ends which forces the exhaust to go out the forward tube then back in the aft tube for much better sound damping than a straight through/glass pack. If you cut near the end, don't cap as it will be too restrictive through the shorter inner tube and just repack.
