Do we have any iRacing folks on here?

They recently released Caterhams onto iRacing, an Academy car and a 420R race version.

I put together a quick livery based on the forum logo for anyone to use. They're quite a handful, but SO much fun.

420r here

Academy here

Enjoy!

I have had a number of people, (OK, men and boys) tell me that they play a video game and their favourite or one of their favorite cars is the Caterham. I’m not into consoles so I do not know which games these are. I do know that one individual said his game had a R500 and IIRC he played it on a PS3. I also know that the PC game RACE released a Caterham expansion pack in 2007 to celebrate Caterham’s 50th anniversary. (They claimed you could choose from 50 different models covering all 50 years but then some of those would have to be Lotus 7’s.)

Back in the day the sym games I played all had problems as the cars never drove like a real car did. Have they developed consumer grade games to the state of the art that the Formula 1 teams use?

Not Iracing but I occasionally race in GT7 on a PS5. In the last moth or so a 2008 Caterham Superlight was added.

While they have improved massively, there is still a big gap. In just the last month I've had the privilege of spending time on a friends new 3 degree of freedom mid-5 figure rig and it is a clear step above other motion rigs I've used. We've been driving only Miatas and 991.1 GT3s (as those are track cars we know) and only on tracks that we know. In iRacing the cars do not represent the specific character of the actual cars.  They have the general characteristics, but, for example, put me blind into a 911 and I can tell you it is a Porsche from the feel of the steering. The sim does not have that level of tactile subtlety.

The real disappointment is Simulator Sickness has not improved. This has always been a problem for me and if anything, this new rig is worse. We spoke with an engineer who specializes in sim tuning and he assures me the sensory conflict causing the problem can be tuned out. So maybe the latest consumer sim hardware is much closer to professional gear, but I think it still takes professional expertise to make it work well.

Did you use VR or screens?

I’ve only ever done VR (Quest 3) and it took me a while of consistent use and building up time to get a tolerance for it. Now I’m fine. Sometimes I don’t use it for a few months and pick back up with no issues. I’ll note I have not used a motion rig.

I think everyone is individual on this though.

I've only used screens.

I've had mild motion sickness sailing. But after the first day, I am fine.  That resistance has yet to kick in on the sim.
