No_6
Just wanted to share a picture of the new addition to my family, a 1997 Caterham Classic. I named her "Gee Bee." I think I will go out and waste some gas, now. http://www.usa7s.com/forum/uploads/20060910_110709_dscn0859-smalle.jpg
Al N.
Congrats No 6. Welcome to the asylum and all that. I was able to burn some petrol in Orange yesterday...no real destination, but definitely not a "waste" of gas! http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/thumbsup.gif
JohnCh
Glad to hear we now have another 7 in Seattle! Did you take the long (i.e. twisty) way home from Portland? -John
slngsht
Congrats. Does this mean you'll have less time behind the keyboard now? http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/wink5.gif

No_6
I took the semi-long way home from Portland. It got dark before we made it very far, so we cut through Aberdeen to Olympia and then I-5 the rest of the way up. I can't think of a better way to have become acquainted with the car. Got some great twisty bits, and an exeprienced driver to follow behind, and I must say that this car is incredibly confidence inspiring. The super-sticky Yokohamas on the car help quite a bit, also. This car has more 'personality' than any car I have every owned or driven, so it took less than half an hour of driving to name her. I am going to have to get some SERIOUS ear protection, though. My head is still buzzing.
slngsht
For ear protection I tried the foam, and the wax plugs. What seems to bother my ear most is the wind noise, rather than exhaust noise. Ultimately, I bought some cheap noise cancelling headphones. I only use them when I get to highway speeds. They work better IMO, and I can listen to some music on a long drive. I can still hear the traffic around me.
Al N.
I just roll with a helmet on longer drives. See latest post at gardenstatesevens.org/wordpress for pix.
slngsht
Al's helmet setup is definitely the way to go. It'd be nice to dump the windshield and have a flipup helmet. Not having the windshield gives a completely different feel to the car, but makes wearing a helmet madnatory.
No_6
I wore a helmet on the way up from Portland, and it was definitely the way to go. I'm going to buy a 1/2 shell, as a full face won't fit in the boot. Anyone know if a 3/4 shell will fit?
Al N.
I've never tried putting my helmet in the boot. With the Fuel Cell, nothing really fits back there anyway. You may want to try ne of the flip-up (motorcycle) like Schuberth or Caber. Also, check out the Bell Mag-8, which my wife uses and likes.
Boxologist
I hope to be ordering a Icon Domain perimeter later tonight. the Domain fit me perfectly. make sure u get to a shop where u try out all shapes and sizes. i prefer having the full face becaue of how exposed the 7 is. and i will probably drive at night w/ the top off until early november. U may want to consider helmets that are ready to have intercom systems installed into them if u plan to do any TSD rallies or something on the scope of targa New Foundland.Boxologist2006-09-12 14:17:
pksurveyor
I use a G-Force open face helmet with goggle to keep the wind buffeting off my eyes for touring. I have a Bell M-2 full face for track. The open face is lighter and allows conversation with the passenger.
jfgw
No 6, congrats on the new car, just nothing like it...enjoy! Two questions - one, are those 13" wheels/tyres and if so, where do you source the yoko's from? Two, regarding helmets, i would love to swap my full screen for a composite or carbon aero item but even shatterproof sunglasses don't fill me with confidence of saving me from a large rock, so would want to use a helmet. I currently have a black Shoei motorcycle helmet with black visor, which I have had since my motorcycle days in the UK and the US and wondered if there are any laws relevant to driving a car on the road in the US (especially Ohio) while wearing a helmet? Thanks James
Al N.
Regarding a helmet in a car....I asked at my local state police barracks (NJ) before ordering and they said it was fine. I have not ever been stopped in the 7 (for wearing a helmet). Note that moto helmets are generally unacceptable for track use, although it seems that some auto-x groups allow it. FWIW, the new Dainese helmets have built in BlueTooth so you can go helmet to helmet wirelessly as well as link to a blue tooth compatible phone. jfgw
Pretty cool Al... My UK motorcycle helmet had a british standard on it and i have taken it to an autocross but no-one seemed to know whether to allow it or not. I suspect the only way i will find out for sure will be to take the car and the helmet to scrutineering and see what happens
Boxologist
i thought most tracks were satisfied w/ a recent SNELL and M rating.

pksurveyor
SCCA requires SA2000 or SA2005 for track days. They will accept M2000 or M2005 for autocross. M95 may still be used for the time being since the 2005 just became effective. Individual clubs are sometimes not as strict. You are right that most track organizers are lax on the enforcing. It is your head after all.
No_6
Those are indeed 13s on the car, the Yokos came with it. They're very sticky when warm, though I'll probably go with a more street-oriented compound when it's time to replace. Well, I looked at some half shell helmets, and even with the side-screens offer little to no wind protection. May be nice to reduce buffeting, though. I found out a 3/4 shell will fit... but it makes a big bump in the boot cover. Oh well. On long trips I'll just wear one of my Arai cycle helmets. The foam ear plugs work fine for short blats around town. As far as the in-between stuff... we'll see.
