Davemk1 Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 So I was in Helena MT yesterday for an event at the Fire Training Facility. I've posted photos of this place before........it's huge. Well the racing is going well but then a call comes over the radio to flag all cars to a stop NOW. Everyone comes to a stop and most of us have no idea what caused this. The the word comes through the radio that there was an antelope walking around on the course. I'll bet this doesn't happen in many places. We all got a huge laugh out of it. Once we got the antelope out of the way things got running again and I'm proud to say I ended up taking FTD. A good day. Dave

Wildlife stay away from our autox events because they have heard Boxologist might be among the drivers.
scannon Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I've been flagged off the Woody Creek Raceway in Aspen twice for deer on the track. Now we know "where the deer and the antelope play" - :flag: Skip

Winston Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 A large animal like that could be a real hazard to a Se7en driver (not just the car)... yikes.
eVox Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 My first time flagging at Barber I recall small birds that would sit on the front straight in the driving line and wait for a car to come. They would then fly up and hit the pressure wave of the car to launch themselves skyward, only to do it again. Looked like fun until a black front running 'vette came (and anything that hits a wedge at that speed is gonna go far!). There were also calls on the radio about a corner worker chasing an armadillo off with a broom in between sessions
Hyper Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 The guy who ran the college machine shop was telling me about a deer that wandered onto the track at Watkin's Glen. One of the track tow trucks offered to go take care of him, and that he did. Boxed it in against the wall right in front of the band stands and sandwiched it into the wall. Quite traumatic for the women and children. I think he said it was several years back, probably wouldn't fly anymore. I also seem to remember a youtube video of a kangaroo on the track for saloon car races.
shiva Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Every year at the Montreal's Formula one Grandprix there are incidents. In our case, it's mostly Mole and occassionaly skunks. Hopefully skunks are scared easily, and the sounds of the F1 makes them run back to their holes. Mole on the other hand, can eat the grass 2 feet from the asphalt as the F1 driver gets by as reduced speed because of an "hazard flag". This year we got lucky and only the Ferrari series got rid of one of two moles.
WestTexasS2K Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 That has to be photo shop job. The antelope would have flown backwards ovet the car not straight up and spinning.
7evin Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Maybe at that very second a space ship saved its little furry life ! Looked like to me it was doing close to 170, But I can't be for sure I did not see the speedo on it..... Do those kind of animals even have speedo's ? :d Cheers 7evin

chetcpo Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 We autocross at a large high school lot. The course blocks access to the library since we use all the space we can. One day, with a car on course a soccer mom drove her minivan around the barriers entering the course from the opposite side of the lot and began weaving her way across the course toward the library. We red flagged the driver and got him stopped in time, and a quick interview with the Mensa representative in the van revealed that she didn't want to have to walk 100yds to the library to return her book.
slngsht Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 oy. wtf. it's amazing people get through life at all.
scannon Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Something got hit and pulverized at the French F1 race during Friday practice. Sharp RH turn and suddenly white things (feathers/fur?) are flying all over and a yellow mess is left at the apex. The residue was still there during the race. Nothing was said about it at the time and they showed it again after the race in the very last scene before signing off where they show the highlights of the day. Anyone hear what it was? Skip

I'll see that and raise you one - Two years ago at a local event at our Ice Garden (skating rink with large parking area) everything was going just fine and I was working the course. I looked over and saw and old Chevy Nova slowly and calmly drive over the cones blocking off the lot and through the yellow caution tape breaking it and onto the course. The racer was flagged and came to a stop no where near the Nova. I walked over to the car and there was an older woman driving and she seemed absolutely clueless that she had driven over cones and through the ribbon to get where she was. I was speaking with her when she started rolling away from me. I yelled for her to stop (she was about to drive up a curb). When I finally was able to ask what she was trying to do she answered "park". Poor old woman was scared to death of me. Sad really. The best fun part of the scene were her license plates which read "SUPRNOVA". dave
Hyper Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I found that video of a Kangaroo on the track. You'd think it would be rare, but there are several kangaroo/race track videos on youtube. Some of them don't make it off as lucky as this guy.
