Seat belts

I have a set of RJS 5 point seat belts. These used to bolt to a 1" bar above the axle, then come through the opening in the seat.

In the redesign, I incorporated mounting locations into the lower cross member on the roll bar (1.75" round tube), so the shoulder belts do not need to be as long. Now they are too long and can not be adjusted to be short enough.

Has anyone run into this?

Mazda - Don't really have any first hand knowledge of this situation, but I thought you could check out this previous thread and maybe find some helpful info: http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=1636

In the thread JBH posted a link to an excellent Schroth manual on all things related to harnesses. http://www.schrothracing.com/docs/Competition_Instructions.pdf

Maybe your situation is addressed in it.

Is this what you want to do?

Yes, except those look like the kind that wrap around the bar, and mine are the type with a metal connector at the end designed to bolt into the chassis, so I can't infinitely adjust the length on the end.

That is what I had but I just tossed the metal connectors and looped the belt around a similar rod behind the seats.

However, I have the shoulder belts coming through holes in the seat back. If they are too far apart I would be concerned to slip out right between them. Actually, in that case there are H-type shoulder belts with a webbing in between to keep them close to the neck.

If your belts just don't fit, Racerwholesale has some decent 6 and seven point harnesses for very reasonable money (about $140 each). They have very good cam locks but maybe not just as soft webbing as the more pricey ones.

Gert, when you say you tossed the metal connectors, you mean you cut them out? did you buy the pieces needed to wrap the strap onto itself around the bar?

I would simply wrap mine around the lower horizontal member of the roll bar... if you look carefully at this pic, you can also see the threaded inserts I have welded into that member for my current seat belt setup:

My seats do have an opening for shoulder belts, so there is no problem with the belts slipping off my shoulder.

Well, the connectors of the Racerwholesale/G-Force harness were some triangular metal tabs with slots for the belt and a hole to bolt it down. The harness came already with the belt buckles to adjust. I only had to loosen/unthread the buckles, pull the belts out of the tabs/connectors, loop them around that rod and thread back into the buckles.

Maybe your harness is just of another style....

Maybe my brain was just fried.

After posting that, I went and laid in bed. The I realized D'oh, I already have a buckle on them... I was too tired to come back down and say that.

Although, on mine, the metal bolt piece is connected to the belt in a section that's sewn in around it. but the solution will work.

Not sure if this helps, but most brand-name harness manufacturers will reweb expired harnesses using the same metal bits to save you money. You could get them to shorten and resew your existing ones for even less I suspect.

cheers
