Regional interest in AutoXing?

Recommended Posts

Folks - a few of us from East, Central, and the West were on a call last night to discuss, among other things, the level of interest in AutoXing in various parts of the country.

There seems to be a largish core group in the Mid-Atlantic states who might be interested in hosting Seven-only events. The costs would most likely be lower than the SCCA, and you'd probably get a lot more seat time, not to mention making connections with other Seveners.

Classes of cars aside, please chime in from the various regions if you know of a core group of Seveners who might be interested in hosting such an event.

Just to clarify, the point of these autocrosses would not be competitive events with points and championships.

These would be more like test and tune, or instructional events, where the objective is to get seat time.

Sounds great, seat time is always desireable. Problem with SCCA in this region (D.C.) is you spend all day for 4 runs.   Definitely like the idea of test and tune with other 7 owners giving feedback and suggestions.

I agree with Russ, the more runs the better, but based on my Philly region experience, someone has to chase cones, work grid, record times etc. So we would have to have a decent number of participants to work while others run. And we'd need a lot of cones. Count me in. Tom

Tom, how many folks from the PA, NJ, DEL area, do you reckon there might be for a Sevens-only AutoX?

I'll assume Michael D., there are usually a couple of others that run in the DC region, I know of one maybe two others locally that would do it for fun. I know there are a couple with the Philly area Lotus society (PALS) but I don't know them. I could post on their message board.

If you didn't mind linking up with another group, I know that the local area Porker club runs an autox that only get about 40 cars or so, and they let other types run. Maybe we could pair up with a like club and split the work. We work for them, they work for us?? Just a thought. Tomyellowss72006-11-08 13:10:39

Hey Guys,

Message sent to other possible interested Lotus groups (you never know who has a Seven in the garage).

Hey, how many cones can you carry in a Seven anyway?????

If you think you'll have a few partners in crime who will autox regularly, you will probably have to invest in buying some cones, so you won't have to beg another group for it.

I have heard Norm in our area has cones.

You can also check with other clubs. When we talked to the Porsche club in Knoxville, they were willing to rent out their equipment for a very reasonable fee.

In thinking over the logistics required for an autox, it might be alot easier to join up at an SCCA or other sponsored event. A bunch of Cobras have shown up and were allowed to run as a group at a couple of our philly region events.

Not as many runs as we'd like but we could use it to establish an interest level.   The Philly region ended its Summer series, this past Sunday. So unless you guys are crazy and want to run in the winter series this may be a moot point until the spring. Tom

Russ didn't let an inch and a half of rain stop him. I doubt the cold will be a problem http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/lol.gif. I have no weather protection, so I drove my other car to the last school.

I typically run the SCCA schools to get more seat time than SCCA events - I just don't have the time to spend almost an entire day for 4 runs.

At least with the schools, I can get about 30 runs in.

The practicality of all this depends on the availability of a lot to run in. If a reasonably priced lot is available, we can run far more runs/$$ than just paying SCCA. More importantly, there is more freedom on how to setup the course to work on specific problems.
