Do you still have the Lucas inertia starter (see picture below)? If so, pull it (should be really easy if it is like the setup in my old crossflow-powered Westfield) and see of the spring on the shaft has broken. This happened to me and produced a similar sound. I replaced it with a gear reduction starter from Dave Bean Engineering. Much lighter and worked great.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Robert. Here's a couple pictures of my Birkin Zetec starter just in case it's the same or similar.

Call Gustafson starters

http://gustafsonspecialty.com/

They have a gear reduction starter that fits the Zetec w/ Birkin bellhousing. I suppose it will fit a Crossflow, too?

Usually they sell only through distribution and for a while they supplied this to MSI but don't do that anymore.

For that reason they sold me one of the few they still had on the shelf direct. Forgot how much but quite cheap. After the change my hot start problems were gone immediately.

Don't know abt Birkins but I could not find a replacement starter for my Crossflow mounted in my 5 sp Caterham. Dave Bean's didn't work. Went to the parts store and tried everything-some teeth didn't match, some teeth matched but the body was too big to fit in the small space, or the shaft was too short, etc., etc. Finally had the starter rebuilt, then the solenoid rebuilt and then replaced.

Finally discovered the problem was a bad connector. Every time we'd fiddle with the system the connection would get jostled into position and we'd conclude our "solution" worked. Then a week later the car wouldn't start.

double drats....

it might not be the starter after all...((though i REALLY appreciate the info so far).

i might have a couple teeth missing on the flywheel ring gear.

the car started fine, after i pushed it a couple feet up a hill in case it didnt. this is going to be a very busy winter!
