Front license plate? Where? How?

Recommended Posts

How/where does one mount a mandated front license plate?

Having just gone through New York State hell for 2 1/2 months, I now have 2 plates for my Classic DeDion Caterham.

(registered as a 2005)

I know it's going to look terrible, but how/where do you all attach the front plate? (or not). What do you do for a bracket for example?

Oh yes, and today its a bit chilly, but I'm still going to drive/celebrate! :-):hurray:

thanks

We dont need no STEENKING front plates !!!!

My front plate for my 7 is in the trunk, and on the vette , it is covered by the corvette cover plate. 14 years driving between the two cars and no tickets, so I guess i'm lucky

I bent the top inch or so of my front plate forward and then bent it rearward just under the numbers and pop riveted it to the chin spoiler.

i had access to very wide velcro, so i cut a length of the loop side and attached that to the back of the plate and bent it around the lower part of the front of the nose cone and zip tied it to the bottom of the grill. eventually i got tired of the front plate in its entirety and took it off.

I made a backing plate the exact size of the L. plate. I used two Adel clamps to hold the top of the plate to the cross bar at the lower rear area of the nose. I then added a brace from the bottom of the plate to the cross brace in front of the oil pan. The bottom of the plate sticks out well past the top. It made a nice little air dam for the front. Will hold the front down at speed over 35 MPH.

I purchased a car from a southern state a few years back with dark window tent. The next AM on the way to the office some dipshit new cop gave me a ticket, no warning, but a ticket. If that great crime fighter saw me with out a front plate he would likely shoot me.

I got a ticket in Palo Alto, CA (while parking) for not having the front plate. They left me with the choice of paying $70 fine and be done with it or a $10 administrative fee and a trip to the highway patrol with the plate mounted. Now what does that tell me about making revenue vs. enforcing the law.....

Anyway, I strapped the front plate to the grille with cable ties and paid my visit to the CHP. Unfortunately the plastic cable ties don't hold up very long to the California sun.

P.S.: I heard some cities are now trying to "motivate" drivers to mount the front plates (some 50% of cars in CA don't have them, although required) because they need the plates on the photograph for the red light runner cameras.

The Peoples Republic of Boulder, Colorado meter maids write tickets for expired plates and used to write them for expired emissions stickers until the state stopped requiring them on windshields. When the revenue from the expired emissions stickers went away they announced the meter maids will be checking for missing front plates and writing tickets for that to make up for the lost revenue.

The police also go looking for missing front plates in the parking lots at Denver International Airport.

I've been driving my Miata without a front plate for about 10 years. I've been stopped 5 times for no front plate and got 2 written warnings and 3 verbals. The last time the cop was far more concerned with the smoked lens on the rear plate. He told me it was a $260 fine and 3 points on the driving record for the smoked lens which I bought at the local Autozone. I removed it immediately. I still don't run a front plate on the Miata.

I read somewhere about using RTV Silicone to attach a good magnet to the inside of a front end (not a Seven), and doing the same on the back of the plate. That way, it goes on easily when you need it there, but there are no holes or brackets visible when you don't. Still haven't actually seen this, but sounds feasible. And I can envision a simple bracket on the back of the plate could adapt this method for attachment on a Seven nosecone easily enough.
