Anyone Know What These Are Used For?

There are two small tubes welded on the gas tank support frame of my Caterham SV about 2" forward of the rear body panel. It they are not used for anything then I am going to remove the one on the driver side to get a little more clearance for my exhaust.

 

The picture shows the exhaust system prior to some restructuring I had done last week to raise it for ground and tire clearance. Now the tips are very close to the tube and if it doesn't have a purpose, I want to remove the one on the exhaust side.

Those are pickups for reverse light and parking lamp brackets on some cars. For instance, mine has the reverse light suspended from one of those.

In my limited experience it *always* feels good to attack something with a die grinder...

Just a thought, You might want to slide a piece of 1/4 steel plate between the aluminum gas tank and

what you are die grinding, just incase you slip things don't go boom. :ack:

Good idea, really don't want any booms. Most likely I will remove the tank to check it out as it is showing some stains and I smelled a little raw gas back there when I unloaded it from the trailer after the exhaust work.

That picture was taken on the first drive last Spring. The car had about 1,500 miles on it and had never been on a wet road. Its not quite so clean now.

NOT TO HIJACK A THREAD,

 

I have the tank out of my 2007 SV right now. Third time since November. It developed a very small leak, and I'm still working on fixing it. I was having trouble getting the fuel pump mounting plate on the right side of the tank to seal; I think the plate was "crimped" and my attempts to tighten the six bolts, and the next time to replace the gasket, then to add a "gasket sealer" to the gasket have warped the plate beyond recovery. I'm working a "new" fix and will post if it works...

Ben from Caterham USA told me that they now use a pop riveted bracket for the reverse and rear fog lights rather than these bosses.

I would leave them for the next owner...you never know. There's no advantage to removing them and some states require backup lights to pass inspection.
