I have a nice full face Shoei motorcycle helmet that's race approved but was looking for something a bit different and opened faced for the car and found these.... maybe a bit too over the top but I think they're kind of cool; especially the orange or stealth titanium. Plus, optional mask when really cold. I like the built in tinted visor too!

We do go on a lot of low altitude recon missions....

too flamboyant?.... probably so,

 

I was looking at the Schubert R1 because I like the tinted visor idea and came across these

 

Maybe it's my military backround and the fact my son thought they were cool....

They are cool, but many track events require Snell ratings for car helmets not motorcycle helmets ( fireproof ratings)

I didn't know that as I've done several track days with my old sportbike.... thought there was only one SNELL test.

 

Hmmm, now I may really have to look into a serious helmet (instead of just for looks and sound protection)

ALL track events require appropriate Snell rating and some times motorcycle approved wont cut it (As noted, track approved helmets have to be fire proof-if you fall off your motorcycle, fire is probably the least of your problems).

 

Anyhow, you have to peel back the helmet lining and show the appropriate Snell rating, or you will be watching the fun from the bleachers. I think Snell 2005 is the most recent standard. Typically, '00 is good enuf, '95 is not. Snell approved motorcycle helmets are sufficient for SCCA as apparently they have necessary fire retardant. It's DOT only helmets that don't cut it.

There are many different Snell standards for rating protective headgear applicable to different activities. The current standards most applicable to automotive outings would be SA 2000 and SA/K2005. I am no expert on this subject, but I have been doing some preliminary research on it for my own needs.
