Grab Handles

Has anyone installed some kind of grab handle or bar on the dash of their Se7en to give passengers something to hold on to? Pictures and sources would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't but for road driving it is not really necessary. Any passenger of normal size is wedged in so tightly they sure can't move.

As for the psychological handle I think passengers just grab the "door" cutout or scuttle but honestly I never paid attention and I have not heard complaints.

Only that driving instructor who braced himself against the big red battery cutoff dash button on the track was really annoying.

Edit...just remembered that you have an SV. Well that may leave a little more wiggle room for the passenger.

I've had many passengers ask what they can hang on to. Several have specifically requested a grab handle.

I thought a handle would give them a (perhaps false?) feeling of security. I think they really want something to keep their right arm from flailing about in the corners. I've experienced this a bit when riding in the passenger seat.

I am also looking to make my exit from the driver side easier on my right shoulder which is still not strong enough to allow me to push myself up to get the left leg out of the car. Getting in is easy, I can essentially just fall into the seat without using my right arm.

tell 'em to grab their ankles. as for an ingress/egress help, can your left should muscle its way to help with a cane? its more about shifting ur weight, but the other should may not have the strength to begin with for my suggestion.

My first ride in a seven was in Micheal D's seven at an autox event. When I got in, he said to crisscross my arms and grab the shoulder belts. That, along with spreading my legs to brace my knees against the sides was more than enough to lock me in place.

I have pull down to tighten shoulder harness so I tell first time riders to hold the pull down ends and try to keep their hands in their laps while holding the straps if it is at an Auto-X otherwise I jest tell them not to grab the shifter or parking brake for oblivious reasons and I have never had a problem as of yet. Oh I also tell them not to grab the windshield frame when they are getting into the car or getting out and usually ask them if they need some assistance after the first ride.

Red Baron's Rotus has a passenger pull handle. But he did not have a source when I asked him years ago. It looks like a small handle. Search for Red Baron ...

The Porsche Cayenne has grab handles on the center console. It looks like an ideal place for the Seven too. I agree that the dash is too far away to do any good. Your passenger may twist his/her wrist trying to hold on.

I cinch up the seat belts, and if going on some twisty roads, I, like slngsht, tell the passenger to cross their arms and grab the shoulder belts. The dash is too far to reach for a grab handle.

Well, I never said I actually tell my passengers that... I just think it's a good idea.

I hand my passenger a fire extinguisher before I fire up and tell them "you're in charge of that!" the look is priceless :D

I, too, always told the passengers in my miata to cross their arms and hold on to the opposing harness belt - right hand holds the left shoulder belt (near the camlock) and vice versa.

During the one trip I've had in a locost I've done the same thing.

BTW, the name of the handle is "the oh s**t! handle" :D

But if they're grabbing their ankles, they won't be able to see what is going on. How are you going to terrify them if they can's see??:D

I'm also interested in a grab handle for the driver's side to aid in exiting the car. My shoulder is still not back to normal and with the removable steering wheel I think I may be able to manage it with a grab handle on the left side of the dash. I need to levitate my butt just enough to get my left leg out of the cockpit. I think the grab handle just might make it possible.

I had a setback with the shoulder last week and I might not be able to drive the car in time for LOG29. It was going so well the PT was about to release me next week but we'll see what the doc has to say tomorrow.

This makes me think of getting one a realistic looking decal of a grab handle and sticking it on the dash.

A noob to sevens won't notice that it is fake...Until the first time they reach for it.:p

The downside might be the condition of the passenger seat squab;)

A few years back, I was invited to instruct at a Porsche Club event at a good sized Kart track.

First , I rode with the Student in his four wheel drive megabuck 99something Porker.

He accelerated down the straight to the first left hander saying" this car's pretty quick isn't it?" I go "Yeah. brake here turn in here look for the apex" etc. After a few laps, and me thinking that the car was utter shite, I say "let's switch cars so I can show you the line you want to take."

Strapped the poor guy in the Birkin and off we went. He didn't say a word during the trip and didn't get sick.

After some laps we go in and I get out of the car explaining technique to him as I walk away from the car. Then I sensed nobody with me so I turn back to the car and he's just sitting there staring blankly. I stiffled a laugh and went back to ask him if he was OK. He did not answer but then responded by attempting to exit the 7. His hands were shaking as he tried and failed twice to egress, falling back into the seat as his legs, to my eye, did not seem to be obeying instructions.

Then I thought "hmmn, The seat".

I quit instructing.

What about a strap that hangs from the roll bar? do u still have range of motion that the healthy shoulder can lift u with that aid?

I think the healthy (left) shoulder can more efficiently help raise me pushing down on the door sill. I don't think the leverages are such that it would be of much use pulling up on the roll bar.

I need to get that crucial first 4 - 6" of lift so I can get my feet on the chassis tube in front of the seat so my right leg can support my weight while the left exits the cockpit.

I'm hoping the grab handle will help with that.

The doc sez no Caterham for six more months, maybe longer so I won't be needing grab handles any time soon. I will not be making it to LOG29 either.:mad::mad::mad:
