6-speed availability?

Recommended Posts

Used ones also come up for sale on Blatchat occasionally. I did a search for "6-speed", "last two years", "titles only", in the "for sale" section and came up with 16 gearboxes. Generally in the 1200-1500 British Pounds range, or approximately $2000-2500. Then you'd have to have it shipped which would be pretty expensive. Do a search here: http://www.blatchat.com/searchsp.asp

I think it'd be pretty hard to find a used one for sale in the US...

cough, cough... ouch!

Still shipping from the UK would be? $500-600 bucks?

I saw a REALLY nicely sorted Caterham that had been updated to the 6-speed tranny and a 190 HP Zeetec for around $20K, but it was in the UK -- I'm thinking a lot of this 7 stuff is cheaper over there!

I think you are correct on that, if you just look at the cost to ship one here and then the markup on that to make a profit and to also make it worth the hassle and time.

An example that is not a 7 but a Porsche, you can do what is called a European delivery where you purchase your new Porsche through specific dealers here in the USA and they arrange for you to go to the factory and pickup your new US Spec Porsche and also spend two weeks in Europe driving the car on a nice vacation and then they will service the car and ship it to the States for you to pickup at a port of entry where you just have to fill out some paperwork and then drive your car home for the same price that you would purchase your new Porsche at the dealer here in the USA. Volvo has the same program and I think so dose BMW and MB if I am not mistaken.

I have done it twice and will do it again as it is a lot of fun and is a great way to spend a vacation and purchase a new car.

If you were looking to get a trick shifter and were willing to spend Cat (BGH-made, I think) 6, then I'd check out a Quaife Sequential.

As for $20K Sevens...pretty rare animal unless it's a locost/home built. Up that to $25-$30k and you'll have a lot more to choose from.

The 6 speed was originally designed by BGH Geartech for Caterham but it is Caterham produced. I dont think there is another supplier you can approach quietly for a cheap bypass to Caterham. I bought a 4 speed ford box off Brian Hill years ago for my ex-Series 2. Just checking his website now he was selling reconditioned/new boxes - 4 and 5 spd only.

Quaife does have the sequential box but they are not cheap either. POA says very expensive to me.

There have been some teething problems discussed on blat chat re the quaife box - not sure if they are sorted out now.

Yeah, I've never seen on stateside for that. This was a [Caterham] car listed in the UK. It was an '87, but had been FULLY updated in '98 and looked to be well sorted (but who's to tell without a full inspection).
