TheDingo8MyBaby Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Thanks for sharing skip. Seems that recently, restoring old transporters has been the trend in the historic race car world. I guess these guys needed to spend money restoring something else than their priceless race cars. They had the Don Orosco's Scarab transporter at the Monterey historics a few years ago. That was really neat to see. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/TheDingo8MyBaby/_mg_6534.jpg I've also seen the Encurie Ecosse transporter: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/TheDingo8MyBaby/Ecurie-Ecosse-transporter.jpg Ferrari Transporter: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/TheDingo8MyBaby/0208_20zoomFerrari_transporter_truc.jpg The Tyrrell Transporter: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/TheDingo8MyBaby/640.jpg
TheDingo8MyBaby Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Or how about a Bud Moore's Ford 8000 COE carrying a Parnelli Jones' BOSS 302 mustang? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/TheDingo8MyBaby/33010010410_large.jpg
scannon Posted November 26, 2009 Author Posted November 26, 2009 About 8 - 10 years ago I was sitting in the pits at 2nd Creek Raceway near Denver when a mid 70's GMC motorhome pulled in and parked. The sleek and low RV that had the Olds Toronado front wheel drivetrain. I wondered why he was parking it in the pits when the driver popped up the whole rear panel, pulled out a couple of aluminum ramps and fired up a Caterham 7 and backed it out. I thought this was a great idea but years later when I finally owned my own Se7en, I tracked the fellow down and he told me he gave it up as a lost cause and sold it for a song. It was unfinished on the inside but I saw potential for a small living space in front of the car and a great way to get your car to tracks near and far. He had named the GMC the Mudhen,
snookwheel Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 (edited) OK... Since we are looking at cool haulers... and at the risk of exposing my Red Neck side to the Seven Folks, here's a unique hauler my Son and I built and used for our Jeeping years.... The ultimate father/son project!! One jeep inside, one behind and full living quarters. Uhaul actually uses pictures of it to sell their old trucks! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/snookwheel/100_3226.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/snookwheel/100_3225.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/snookwheel/100_3150.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/snookwheel/100_3148.jpg Just before we sold her, she was a hauler for our Solo Vee: Edited November 26, 2009 by snookwheel
DeanG Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Thanks for posting. A local guy (out of Virgina Beach) has an old GMC stake bed to haul his autoX Morgan. It makes a very impressive appearance. Unfortunately I have no pictures.
Sean Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 There was an article on pistonheads about a funky/cool one-of-a-kind MB race hauler just the other day here http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn384/BBL-Sean/smileys/Merctrux2-L.jpg
scannon Posted November 26, 2009 Author Posted November 26, 2009 That MB hauler must be a kick to drive sitting in front of the front axle. I've had two Corvair Rampside pickups where you sit right over the front axle and the ride motions and sensations were really different. Great little truck though and with radial tires, stiff shocks and a camber compensator it made a fairly decent canyon carver in its day. Scared the crap out of a number of sports car owners taking them for rides in the canyons. The MB hauler looks to have a little bit of crush room before you die in a head on collision. In the Corvair, your knees and feet were the crush zone, just a flimsy bumper and one layer of sheet metal between you and death.
escondidoron Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 This is probably a bit of a stretch.... The Audi Sport transporter: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2623/4137993877_09f4627e65_b.jpg The Scuderia Ferarri team transporter http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2684/4137054013_b5ea0d0267_b.jpg And the Scuderia Ferrari chase vehicle: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2595/4137051813_466f27936f_b.jpg I'm thinking that these qualify as transporters of vintage race cars because the pics were taken at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this past July. The cars that were transported were all "old" race cars (i.e. vintage). Pre-war Mercedes F1: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2668/4137135035_632f43a2f3_b.jpg

sdca7 Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 Look at this guy's homemade rig, the "Car Camel": http://www.netbug.net/blogmichael/?p=21 I've thought of doing something similar - having a low loading height with a van body up front and perhaps using a trailer frame for the rear.

Arya Ebrahimi Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 OK... Since we are looking at cool haulers... and at the risk of exposing my Red Neck side to the Seven Folks, here's a unique hauler my Son and I built and used for our Jeeping years.... The ultimate father/son project!! snook, had no idea you were a 7'er too! You might recognize my name from Pirate Small world!
snookwheel Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 It is a small world! We are doing more of the fast stuff than off road stuff these days... but I miss it. Once my kid left for college, I was solo. My wife will go fast, just not off road, so the 7 works out great! Good to see another Pirate here.:cooldude:
DeanG Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 OK folks someone with deep pockets needs to step up http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/28121/John_Player_Special_Race_Transporter.html
scannon Posted December 13, 2009 Author Posted December 13, 2009 ^^^That's a great solution to transporting your Se7en to the track.
sdca7 Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Another cool car hauler. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-FW-DRIVE-98-GMC-FWD-CAR-HAULER-TRADE-STREET-ROD-HOT-CLASSIC-RAT_W0QQitemZ290383205407QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item439c30141f
