solder_guy
LA: outside of the east end of LAX: The Proud Bird restaurant is a museum inside and out of aviation. There are several planes on pedestals and there is an X-1 out back too. Worth a visit! Their website is crap. Atlanta: south end of Dekalb Peachtree Airport is the 57th figher group restaurant . WWII themed .. watch planes taxi by while you enjoy drinks. I've been to these two .. others? Rob Edited March 17, 2010 by solder_guy
escondidoron
My personal favorite is "Riding on a Wing and a Prayer" bar & grille. It's about 10 miles south of the south entrance to EAFB in Lancaster, CA. Corner of 90th St East and Avenuie J. The empanage sticking out of the front south east corner of the building is a very nice touch. They have a lot of memorabilia, photos and autograpohs inside. Grub is decent and beer is ice cold in the summer. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3329/3313607896_f76f715356.jpg Edited March 17, 2010 by escondidoron added pic
Croc
My favorite is The Landing Strip Cafe. Based on the Auburn Maine Local Airport, it is very popular with recreational flyers on the weekend who can fly in for a meal and then fly out continuing to do some flightseeing. Views are great as it is right alongside the main runway. Also there is a Lockheed Constellation that is undergoing restoration by Lufthansa - eventually to fly again. It is so low key that it does not have its own website but instead is listed on the various recreational flyer boards as a place to go for a good homestyle meal - only open breakfast and lunches - no one flys in at night for this. http://flytome.com/airbiz.html
gjslutz
At Cleveland,OH- Columbus,OH- Canton Akron, OH all 3 each has one like Atlanta chain is. Urbana, Salem, Carrolton, Batavia, Dayton, New Philadelphia, Portsmouth, Coshocton, Mansfield, OH, are just a few that are found in Ohio, that are small like at many airports around the country. I can also think of at least 6 around the Pittsburg area. The smaller ones mentioned here, you park you’re A/C in front and a few steps latter your inside. No security, or police state. The smaller ones here are not overpriced chains, just mom & pop places trying to make a living. At all, the owners & staff are friendly and the food is good. Like all of the small business around the country, if they provide a good product & service they thrive, if not they close, much like the way things should be. Off Road SHO
The Left Seat at Phoenix Deer Valley. It sits right next to the itinerant parking ramp where all the warbirds from the Cold War years come to visit. Tom
