G2sound Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 My 2003 S1 has a Zetec engine, but is there any way to tell which version of the Zetec I have (ie. ZX1, ZX2 or ZX3)?
11Budlite Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 (edited) ZX1: '95-'97 - Hydraulic lifters, aluminum valve cover, water pump pulley centered over crank pulley. ZX2: '98-99 - Mechanical lifters, aluminum valve cover, VCT cam solenoid in front of #1 spark plug wire, water pump pulley offset to the exhaust side of the crank pulley. ZX3: '00-'04 - Mechanical lifters, plastic valve cover, no VCT cam solenoid, water pump pulley offset to the exhaust side of the crank pulley. The dates are approximate. Here's some photos. Sorry, they're the only ones I have at work. Top to bottom, ZX1, ZX2, ZX3. Hope this helps. Edited June 12, 2010 by 11Budlite

MBEARDEN Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Looks like I have an ZX3 motor. I found the VIN Birkin 2061 /03...found it hidden under a water line. Still curious about the Emerald ECU and how user friendly it might be. Spark plugs? Thanks for the help

1turbofocus Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 To ID the Zetec is fairly ease The Contour and ZX2 will have a VCT Exh cam gear buldge on timing cover Exh side The ZX3 has to STD flat cam gears , flat timing cover The SVT has the VCT Gear on the Intake side , buldg on timing cover Intake side As for the questions about the Engine Management if you have the Ford ECU keep it it is by far the best Engine Management you can have and you have 2 options for tuning the SCT Pro Racer Package where you can tune the Ford ECU your self or Custom tuning from some one like me that can do your tuning 100% remote and has done more with the Zetec engine then any one Tom
Kitcat Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Tom: Just curious, any experience w/tuning Duratec engines and, if so, do you have a preference between them and Zetec? Also, why so much experience w/Zetecs? Thx, Mike
1turbofocus Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Yes I have tuned hundreds of the Duratec engines both the 2.0 and the 2.3 I own a Co. Called Focus-Power and do a lot of work with the Zetec because it came out in the Ford Focus in 2000 and thats when I started with the Zetec I have taken a Zetec engine to 723HP to the wheels in my daily driver , NA engine to over 220 with out ITB`s I also have a full machine shop , in house dynojet dyno , I tune with SCT and Diablosport for the stock ECU I work with all the Contour / ZX2 / ZX3 / SVT / Duratec engines and have tuned and built hundreds of them Best place to find out more about me is http://www.focusfanatics.com I would love to get me hands on a Caterham and turbo it to about 300HP as a daily driver Tom
Jackal Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 723 hp, LOL! I am adding you to my Rolodex:). +1 one for that.
S1Steve Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 723 hp, LOL! I am adding you to my Rolodex:). Mike, I firmly believe that would make YOU the king at track events ........
Kitcat Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) I thot I was the King already:)! And with that much hp, I'd never survive my 1st track day. Also mite be a little hard on the tranny etc., etc. I'd settle for what Croc and Karl have at the rear wheels (250 hp???). Edited October 27, 2011 by Kitcat
1turbofocus Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Oh come on ... everyone needs at least 300HP to the wheels LOL Everyone talkes in HP where they should be talking in TQ , coming off that corner to hit the straights with 280 Pound Ft of TQ would be very nice Tom

SNAP!!!! That would be the sound of your rear diff support being torn from the chassis. And I and my little 150 ftlbs of torq, driving on by.:seeya::auto: Tom
S1Steve Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 (edited) Tom, Here's the 50 cent question. Do know anything about the Web-Con TB and ECU setup on a Zetec. 146 hp now, I be happy with an extra 50 or 60..... Thanks , Steve Edited October 27, 2011 by S1Steve
1turbofocus Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 Sorry not up on all the ITB`s out there ,It would take a year on the dyno to test them all with all the diff combos It is fairly easy to get 155-165 with the stock ZX2-ZX3 intake manifold moderate built engine and 180`s with good ITB`s Tom

1turbofocus Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Jenvey mostly there is a few other i have worked on I am no expert with the ITB world Please everyone keep in ming that most of my work is with the ZX2 /ZX3 /SVT Focus which uses the stock intake manifolds It still comes down to the same thing how to make SAFE power with these engines and I can do that Tom
hoefi Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Tom, what level of power will the ZX2 stock intake manifold support? Can a stage 3 Comp Cam and a 65mm single throttle body work with the stock manifold and head? TIA.
rzempel Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I have Crower stage 3 cams and a 65mm throttle body with stock manifold. The manifold needed to be modified a bit for the 65--I filled in the O ring recess on the top of the manifold and opened up the hole so that it matches the throttle body. With 10:1 pistons, and the above setup, I get 174 hp at the wheels.
