What's the purpose of these attachments?

Looking at other cars with similar mods...I thought it was an aero mod to make the car more slippery. But now I am seeing more pics like above where it seems to just be side impact perhaps? :conehead:

Tom knows from experance as he is an Auto-xer that has caught some cones from time to time.

Here is my solution to keeping rear fenders from contacting those pesky cones.

I thought the purpose of those were to keep the tires from crawling up other tires.

I put money into the "driver mod" so those attachments are not needed. I drive AROUND the cones not over them.

Some desert racers recently came to the east coast for a race. A few of them must have been exposed to auto-cross at some point or another, as they devised "tree deflectors" that have a distinctly similar appearance to "cone deflectors"
