HELP!

My starter died on the 1600 x-flow.

I can get one through pegasus racing but it's 500$...anyone have a better (more affordable) source?

Did you try having it rebuilt? The local shops in our area do that for a flat rate of $40-50, as long as the major parts are still usable. They will replace bearings, sprockets, solenoid contacts, brushes, plastic caps, re-solder, blast and repaint etc.

Back when I had a crossflow, I purchased a gear reduction starter from Dave Bean Engineering. As I recall it was about $175, but that was 8 or 9 years ago, so no idea if they still carry them or the current price. Probably worth a call...

The Dave Bean gear reduction starter I bought didn't fit, in spite of their assurances to the contrary, so I sent it back. I think it was abt $280. Rebuilding may be the way to go. Ask Chris at Sevens and Elans-he has a guy who specializes in rebuilding these units-at least those used on Caterhams.

does anyone have experience with the tilton starters on this engine?

I believe I have the 110 ring gear

the starter I have has 3 bolt pattern with a 10 tooth pinion, the tilton starters for the same engine seem to have 9 tooth pinnion?

What about just buying a normal '72 1600 Pinto starter? Rock Auto has some around $60 and a bunch of different parts to rebuild them.

I've used them for a bunch of parts for my '77 capri and am generally happy with their service; I'm not affiliated with them.

We tried the Pinto starter on my car-wldn't fit. That doesn't mean it wld be a problem for a Birkin tho.

Robert, I know a local guy that can help you out, his shop is on the south side of Canton.

You can mention my name & not get thrown out.

G&M, ask for George, 477-3392

We took the advice of my local race car guru (Craig Chima) and got the starter rebuilt.

American electric in downtown Akron, rebuilt it for 70$ in 2 days. Quick and thrifty

Works great, problem solved.

I was told that the starter (even though not very old) was very light duty and simply worn out..the rebuilder replaced the internals with a bit more heavy duty wiring and Pieces..

Oh i had looked into getting a stock pinto starter but it wasnt the same configuration.
