Definitely off topic but I thought I would throw throw this out there.

 

I am rebuilding a Jaguar engine this winter and instead of hanging it off the end of a traditional bell-housing mounted engine stand I thought I would build a stand that catches the block in the middle so that I could access the flywheel and timing gear.

I remember seeing old photos of Alfa and Bugatti engines being assembled on cool looking stands and I thought I would try to build something similar. I would like to build something elegant as well as functional and I am shamelessly soliciting design input as well as ideas that might be useful additions to an engine stand.

If anyone has any old pictures or design input I would love to hear from you.

The generic engine stands I have seen bolt to the engine block at an engine mount. The engine can then be spun around that point so you can work downhand on either the top or bottom.

I 'woulda thought the Jag In-line 6 would outweigh an entire Chevy (maybe just a Nova)

I have a factory Volvo 4-cylinder mount that bolts to the side of the block, and then at the other end has a rotatable turret that fits the standard engine-stand base.

 

I suppose something similar, but wider, would work for a 6-cyl. Volvo engine, or a Jag engine

 

I'll take a photo of it, and post.

Here are two photos of my simple Volvo "side-mount" stand. I don't know if something similar would work for a Jag engine.

Short of fabbing the whole thing yourself you may find it cheaper in the long run to purchase a really commercial heavy duty engine stand and fab just a yolk to use a side mount like the Volvo one shown.

A far as what a Jag motor weighs, well, the crank has enough counterweights, main and rod bearing journals to melt down and build TWO Novas!!

The only problem I really had when mine was on the engine stand was it was "front heavy", my stand was pretty cheezy, I was using the stand off spacers so I could mount the flywheel and clutch/pressure plate and the motor is long compared to a big block Chevy. Pay the extra money and get one that is really solid and has casters that actually roll under a load, has good long bottom legs and four casters and you won't need the side mounts.
