MichaelD
I am replacing my Old, Stock Caterham muffler. My motor is a 220 hp Zetec. Up for consideration are Burns and Hush Power. Links below: http://www.buainless.com/sm-200-350-17.aspx http://www.hushpower.com/product/29/HP-2+Series+Mufflers.html Does anyone have experience with either of these? WestTexasS2K
I've used the HushPower I liked it pretty well it does seem to get louder over time.
turboeric
The Dec 2010 issue of Grassroots Motorsports has an article comparing the dyno output for a Civic Si using a Supertrapp in various configurations vs 3 Burns mufflers: a 17 and a 22 inch, and a 2 stage. The Burns mufflers performed extremely well, staying under 93 dB while making the best peak hp. They said nice things about the construction quality and the sound. No comparison info other than to the Supertrapp, which wasn't impressive.
MichaelD
Thank you both for your reply. I would imagine that all mufflers will get a little louder with age. I had seen the Burns test. However, their website does not offer a 22 inch muffler. I am looking at their 17 x 2" in and out. I am also looking at the HushPower 18" x 2" in and out. The Burns is about twice as much as the HushPower. But, the Burns is repackable. I am leaning twoards the Burns at this point.
rnr
I got a custom hushpower after Lorens recommendation and am very happy with it. It brought my sound levels down from 109 db (old burnt out exhaust) to 95 dB with no noticable loss of power. Additionally they stay cool enough that they will not instantly sear the skin off which is useful in a Seven.
yellowss7
Here's a working link for the burns one. http://www.burnsstainless.com/sm-200-350-17.aspx
WestTexasS2K
Hush power does have the cool shell design which is something to consider in a car you have to enter and exit over the muffler it really works great.
twnpipe
Let us know how it turns out. I have dynaflows but they rapidly burn out to almost open exhaust.
MichaelD
Vince ar Burnssaid this: As you probably are aware, those engines are LOUD. I would not go smaller than 4-1/2” OD, as long as you can and a 2-stage. Better yet, the 6-1/4” can, Please let me know how I can be of further assistance. pi7ot
I need a new silencer. The expensive UK Techcraft fit the bill, but are too hard on my wallet. I'm looking for a 6" minimum OD can about 20" long with 2.25" ID in/out. I wonder if Burns could construct some for a group buy? m
MichaelD
6"OD is bigger than I want. I am looking at 4.5 OD 2.5 in and out with a 10 " 45 degree tail pipe. Contact Vince at Burns and ask. His direct number is 615-750-2024. I just left him a mesage.
MichaelD
I just spoke with Vince at Burns regarding a group buy. He would be interested in working with a group of 10 or more. I also suggested that he sign up with USA7s.com to stay in touch with the group. Here is his contact info: Vincent Roman Burns Stainless LLC http://www.burnsstainless.com 1013 West 18th Street Costa Mesa, CA 92627 (615) 750-2024 Office, (949) 631-5120 Shop, (615) 250-6717 FAX
Birkin42
I'm interested in a group buy for a Burns muffler, particularly if it is special that is a bit longer. I am looking for something reasonably quite to suit street use and track days. I haven't got to sorting out how I want to do my exhaust yet, but it is a project that is coming up soon, so a group buy opportunity would be good timing. What spec's are we thinking? MichaelD
Jack, The group buy was suggested by pi7ot. I am only interested in a 4.5 x 24 x 2.0 in and 2.0 out. This will replace the Caterham muffler that I have now and be about 10 lbs lighter. I don't know how loud it will be and have a way to test it prior to build. I am also not interested in leading the group buy. Those that are interested in a group buy should call Vince at Burns. Maybe he doesn't care if everyone has different specs. Let him handle it. bsimon
Maybe he doesn't care if everyone has different specs. There are a dozen or so different cans for the various Caterham models alone. I could use a 2.5" I/O X 5" X 20" to replace the clapped out stock zorst on my car. It's getting pretty loud these days, and Caterham no longer offers a replacement. Edited December 25, 2010 by bsimon
pi7ot
Mike. How about these? http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection2.asp?Product=1840 m
MichaelD
These are from either Burns or Coast fabrication. Coast makes the Burns units. According to Vince at Burns we need at lease a 4.5 dia and should keel with the same length as supplied by Caterham or it will be way to loud. midgetracr
I used the Burns muffler on my USAC midget. It did help the noise but blew the packing out rather quickly. For what it is worth, I've used the Hushpowers on both my V6 and V8 Stalkers. They use internal louvered baffles without packing and do not get noiser with time. Hushpowers also have the benefit of the outer case not getting as hot as normal mufflers. This is appreciated when getting into or out of my Stalker. Just my opinion. MichaelD
John, What size HushPower do you use? George Hillard has one on his Birkin and seems to like it as well.
midgetracr
Michael, The body of my Hushpowers is about 17" long. They are about 5" high and 4" wide. This does not include the inlet and outlet pipes. I think those were 2 1/2" but I cut them off and welded the body to my 3" collector and tail pipe. Don't recall the Hushpower part # but I would do the same thing again if/when I build another car. John
