timax Posted May 6, 2011 Share Posted May 6, 2011 Most research i'm doing into tires talks about ultimate grip levels and not feel on the limit. I'm running A048 R tires at the moment 195/60/14 and find at the limit they can let go quite quickly. On street i'm talking , not track. When these are up for replacing I want to run a more road based tire in the same size that will allow me to "explore" the limits of the car a little easier , give me plenty of warning of letting go . The Direzza z1 I hear is good but how is it at the limit?? This is what I want to find out. Who is running what and how are they. What should we be running on our light weight cars? 2 seconds per lap at my local track is not what i care about. Having fun getting there is. I'm embarrassed to divulge how many few miles are on the tires that came on my '02 Cat Roadsport (new build in 6/03), after almost 8 years of ownership I feel I should probably change out the tires, not for wear but for age reasons. I've followed conversations over the years about tires and am left with the thought I should have Toyo RA-1's, R888's, or Avon ACB10's in that order of preferance based on member inputs. Existing tires are Avon ZV1 185/60R14's (as supplied), which IIRC, are rated as really crappy tires and should be replaced if for no other reason than on GP. I've thought about putting the car up for sale over the last couple of years due to my not being able to utilize/enjoy it, but before I make that final decision to sell I thought I should (maybe) put on fresh rubber. It hasn't seen one minute of track time since it's only street driven. Thoughts/recommendations? Thanks in advance! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
yellowss7 Posted May 6, 2011 Share Posted May 6, 2011 Jim, the ACB10's are a cross ply, very very light weight, very limited tread so not good in the wet, and apparently are known to tram line (follow ruts etc) It's a great track tyre in the dry, but probably way overkill for normal street driving. The AVON CR500 is a better choice for the street, still really lightweight, a lttle more tread but also still pretty expensive. Toyo R888's are heavier than the AVON's but for street driving you won't really notice too much. Tread similare to the Avon CR500's, cost a little less. Still an R compound tire so pretty sticky compared to most normal tires. For the Street these tires are More than enough to get you into trouble as they will stick when warm. The RA1 will also get very vocal when it's being pushed past it's preferred slip angle, at least it does on heavier (3,000 lb +) cars. I can't say for sure if it will talk like that on a seven. Kitcat Posted July 6, 2011 Share Posted July 6, 2011 My RA1's are pretty quiet, even at maximum slip angle. They toss a lot of stones in the cockpit and add road rash to the fenders. But when/if they ever wear out, I will get anther set. They do well at the track, wear well (10K miles and counting) and are good in the rain (at least while they have tread). Avon's when warm still very good but most of the time do not get them warm enough on the street & have not experienced them in new condition, thinking I should stay with them and consider alternatives next time. The Stig Posted July 7, 2011 Share Posted July 7, 2011 In the UK I replaced Yokohama 048s with Toyo R888 and they were great. There they ar available in two compounds, the GG or SG. SG being softer and warms quickly. I ran a set for two seasons on a hillclimb Seven and even on a 45 second run, they got pretty warm and you could drive confidently from cold. Jackal Posted July 8, 2011 Share Posted July 8, 2011 I have about two seasons of Auto-X on my Dunlop Durezza Star Specs and I love them. Lots of feedback, and great grip in the wet. I find them a little slippy when cold though, and they wear a little quicker than other tires I've seen. I will run a set on the Birkin and see if the results are the same as my 3600 lb WRX. Yokohama produced a great performance tire the ES100 but it has been discontinued in North America. Australia still get them, go figure. TireRack still has a few.
