Standard Caterham Calipers vs M-16

Recommended Posts

I have a sticky piston on one of the front brake calipers which is the standard Caterham S3 type.

Having looked at replacement, is the 'standard' M-16 caliper the same fitment as the Caterham one? The body looks slightly different but I seem to think that they are the same. The Caterham caliper is significantly more expensive.

Not planning a major brake upgrade just now so need an easy fix.

Thanks

I knew this was a stupid question. Should have kept it to myself as further investigation came across the answer (I think).

Triumph Spitfire Mk IV Type 14 calipers and pretty cheap too. New both sides I think.

BTW. Posting a question and providing the answer yourself is surely a sign of madness!

Stig, just an FYI the standard caterham/triumph brakes are more than adequate for almost any usage. They are cheap, Rotors are cheap and they do the job. Just for comparison, price out the cost of just the vented rotors for the Caterham AP brake upgrade. They are Significantly more pricey. The UK guys don't think it's worth the costs. That being said I do have the AP 4pot calipers and vented rotors. :leaving:

The standard front calipers are Triumph Spit and if you are looking for an economical repair are easily rebuildable. The caliper seals break down and there is usually debris built up around the seals. That is why they get sticky. Kits are readily available as are pistons in both standard and stainless steel. They are also used on late Elans and Europas. The caliper body usually exhibits little wear so just pop them out, clean them up and fit new seals and sometimes pistons.

I have driven Cats with both 4 pot and standard 2 pots on the track and the 4 pots go way deeper into the corners.

Are you referring to the 4 pot M-16 Outlaw Caliper? http://www.outlawdiscbrakes.com/m16.html

Last time I checked they were about $400 for a pair of them.

With the discussion on 7 brakes using triumph uprights, depends on which upright. The spitfire upright uses 3.25 bolt spacing whereas the stronger GT6 upright uses 3.5 bolt spacing.

I was able to bolt on Wilwood 4 pot calipers onto the GT6 upright with a little machining on the caliper. Also lost about 10 lbs per caliper.

Upgrading to the Outlaw M-16 would be great although I guess that also means upgrading the Master Cylinder.

Been through some of that pain before on a Westfield. Te results was great after I also replaced the pedal box to change the brake force ratios. Solid as a rock!

This time looking for a simple fix - although still tempted by the Outlaws....
