slngsht Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Passed away today [HD] IndyCar 2011 - Las Vegas Big Crash (Dan Wheldon RIP) - YouTube
WestTexasS2K Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Yeah I watched that race today. Very sad accident. He couldnt have hit that fence in a worse position. No way to control a car in the air unless they start putting flight surfaces on them.
jimrankin Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Only automobile racing and mountain climbing are true sports, everything else is just a game. Ernest Hemmingway. I scare myself and know I am at or past my limits at 120 MPH, I have no idea how these drivers can make the corrections and decisions they do at 220 MPH. It is easy to see from what happened here that the outcome is out of your hands at some point and you are truely placing yourself in the hands of your personal god. I hope that Dan did not suffer or have time to think of the loss his family was going to sustain.
scannon Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I was at the race as part of LOG31. It was horrible to watch the carnage, especially the five cars which caught on fire. After about an hour we heard that the drivers were called into a meeting. About the same time Danica was being interviewed when someone came up to her and whispered in her ear. She broke down and started crying and walked away from the camera. At that point we knew someone had died. Shortly after that Ross and I decided to head back to the hotel. I really regret not being there for the five lap tribute to Weldon.
Alaskossie Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Only automobile racing and mountain climbing are true sports, everything else is just a game. Ernest Hemmingway. Hemingway's actual quote included bull-fighting as a true sport... of course, Hemingway would. The universe of "true sports" at the risk level of the three chosen by Hemingway has expanded recent years -- all the varieties of para-sailing, BASE-jumping, extreme skiing and snowboarding, etc. But auto racing is still one with infinite potential to kill and maim, as this weekend's events have shown, sadly.
DeanG Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 The fires seem to burn for a long time. The fires were still burning when cars that avoided the crash were in the pits.
