Mike, your mechanic at Exoticars swears you can take the right hand turn at the end of the long straight at Lightning at 130 MPH with your ground effects!

Nah....I am trying for a flat out through Turns 2 and 3 at Thunderbolt this season. Anyone want to try and keep up? :nopity:

UPDATE:

Apparently the SCCA stewards have determined a full roll cage (SCCA Compliant) is required for the school. So, I have the car at a local fabricator who is building a cage. (I feel like I'm in an episode of Orange County Choppers and am down to 50% odds that it will be done in time)

I may end up renting a car for the event. Entropy Racing has some Spec Racers and even a Caterham S3 (I'll need to borrow a shoe horn and some Vaseline) and I have a leads on a race prepared BMW E30.

Bit disappointing that they rule so late. I am not surprised I thought their regs were restrictive to start with - they dont like sevens.

I was still planning to pay you a visit on the Saturday afternoon en route to my dinner in Long Beach Island.

Tom is pretty handy with vaseline so he can come early to help you out. :jester:

Looks like I'll have to make a run to Costco to get a Large vat of the Vaseline. It's going to take a lot to grease Karl up enough for him to fit in an S3. Mike has a foot fetish so we'll let him figure out how to fit your feet in the pedal box. :smash::smilielol5:

Hold the Vaseline boys; looks like they have a big boy car! 3" extra in the seat, tall roll bar and for good measure they are moving the pedals back an inch.

I'll miss my Caterham... no Cosworth power. These cars come with a 1.7L Renault motor with a four speed. Not sure how fast 80 HP will get my mass around the track.

Karl,

Thats a great car to learn to drive in. That R300 has you spoiled, this will teach

you all about momentum, because of the lack of hp, car control ( spec radial tires),and they are a very proven race car. And this school will be alittle more racy than your track days. You may learn to love these cars. Save the chance of something bad happening to

the seven also.

Well boys, I am now the proud holder of an SCCA Novice Race License (that's scary). The school was great, they kept us running non-stop but I got 6.5 hours of on track time on NJMP Lightning over the weekend.

I was driving a Spec Racer (Renault 87HP motor). A momentum car for sure. I have a new understanding of fun in a low powered car. You ran flat out most of the time, just lifting between 3-4, breaking a little going into turn five, turn 7 and turn 1.

Since it was a rental car, I was not afraid to push it harder than I would my Caterham. I did manage to spin four times, three of those ending up off the track. It was fun to feel it break loose and then recover. I did hate seeing the Spec Racer Fords (110 HP) walk away from me in the straights though. All in all, a great learning tool, my line is 100 times more consistent than it was before.

Now I can't wait to get the Caterham on that track.

Good job Karl! You learn many things when you spin (in addition to humility:)): car control, car non-control, where the limit is, realizing exceeding the limit is (ordinarily) survivable, and you get that special feeling that comes when you realize that fate will determine the outcome of the spin. Plus it makes Tom so happy!

I stopped by the track late in the afternoon to see Karl grid up and then watch 2 of the afternoon sessions. It was bitterly cold there - tires would have big trouble getting any grip.

When I arrived I had the surprise of watching a Mustang destroy itself at Turn 1 and get towed back in bleeding fluids. End of the weekend for that student.

The cheese wedge cars were certainly gutless - they moved slower than a Craftsman ride on mower - good learning experience though. Karl you should have tried one of these for cutting the grass when you went off spinning? :willy_nilly: Your lines looked pretty good though - but I always thought that anyway - especially compared to Tom's.
