Why do wheel makers hate me so much???

It's probably because I have the 5 X 100 bolt pattern that no one but a couple of Subaru owners seem to share but man, what a limited supply of 8" & 9" X 15" wheels out there for an S2K. Off sets of about 35 front and 48 rear really takes it down to about "nothing" unless you want to spend crazy money.

I have managed to pretty much keep it on the pavement in the past but know that if I spend big bucks on some really light weight wheels (meaning fragile also) I'm afraid that long lucky streak might end. I can duplicate the 17" Team Dynamics street wheels I use on track now but really want to get down to 15" and dedicated track tires.

Diamond says they can't make them because their wheel rims have too much depressed center (13.3" on 15" wheels) to fit over the Wilwood 12" brakes. Guess it's chuck up the big bucks for some aluminum foil wheels and hold my breath on the corners unless someone has a source I have not found.

Thanks for any suggestions or links.

There are several Ultralites running Diamond wheels with the 12" wilwoods. They should clear fine. Order just one and try it. If it doesn't fit I will refund your cost of the wheel. Be sure to make a measurement of the hub center ring on the rear. We had a guy using to small of a bore and the brake rotor wasn't being pinched in place and he kept breaking g rotors he fixed the problem with the correct hub center size.

Mondo you may not need a supercharger if my new engine builder can deliver the results he claims. He has a very good pedigree so assume it will be a he says. He is building me a 2.2l that will run on pump gas. It's should be very reliable and make 325-350hp and about 220 ftlbs of torque. It has over 180 ftlbs from 3k rpm and up which 20 more than a stock engines peak torque makes.

949 Racing has 17" 5 x 100 wheels for reasonable prices. Their 15" wheels are highly thought of in the Miata community, but only come in 4 x 100 unfortunately. 949 Racing Rota has a number of 5 x 100 15" wheels.

Another option is to convert to 5x 4.5 bolt pattern. Your front hubs already have that pattern in them. You will need to drill the hats for the 5x4.5. For the rear some of the earlier stub axles have room to re-drill. The later Subarus have 5x4.5 bolt pattern. I'm unsure if the stub axles will fit. Call Mellinium auto they specialize in Subaru parts and most likely will know which year models to use http://y2kimports.com/ . I had researched this a few years ago but can't find my notes. I went with the complete sti setup instead. This will give you a bunch more wheel options.

(1) I already have a set of 15" X 10" Diamond wheels and with a 5MM spacer they clear the calipers but only with a low offset as the depressed center of the wheel shell is much smaller so you can't get a deeper offset than I already have and it really puts the wheels WAY outside the car. Probably OK if you set the suspension up for the added offset but do both track and street so one of the two will suffer.

(2) I already went through looking into changing to 5X114 a couple of years ago but not enough room on the hubs to re-drill at 114 and got told it was cheaper/easier to just upgrade the whole rear as parts are not always compatible because Subaru kept changing as the cars got more powerful and heavier so you need to know exactly what you have to start with and I don't, or change it all.

(3) I have a really nice set of Team Dynamics 8" & 9" X 17" wheels so if I change to 114 now I will be out the use of them.

(4) I probably have a weeks work into web searches of probably every wheel makers sites (God are there some Butt Ugly wheels out there) without finding 15" wheels that make the width/bolt pattern/offset.

Rota 15" wheels are all narrow. They make them in the Philipines and getting them to make special bolt patterns or blanks isn't offered.

(5) Since changing the pattern would cost as much as the diference between reasonable priced wheels and going to something more costly, and tossing my existing TD 17"'s, looks like it's going to be the "costly and fragile" wheels I was trying to avoid or another set of 17" TD's and some light low profile slicks for the track. One of the reasons for wanting 15" rims is that I have the car set "up" a bit to clear speed bumps and my "California driveway" rolled curbs so the car would get lower for track days when I put the 15"s on.

(6) West Texas, just what in H--L does your guy do to get that kind of HP out of a N/A 2.2L Honda on pump gas??? Obviously a lot has to be in the engine management as well as mechanicals. Contract with the Devil? LOL.

(7) Now open to advice about which 15" custom/multi piece/etc. wheels anyone has some experience with. Cheap b-----d that I am $700+ a wheel is out.

It's not just us S2K drivers who are always looking for more power without going to a super or turbo charger. The Honda S2000 web pages are jammed with "how can I squeak a bit more power /torque out of it?" and pretty much that is what they seem to be able to manage, a "squeak" more and that's it. Hope your guy comes through Loren because it sure sounds good!

I have a dyno chart that shows a 2.2l na he had on the dyno the other day. It has ITB, idles at 800 rpm and cant tell it's not a stock engine. I can't get the chart to paste on my phone. When I get home to tomorrow I'll post it up. It made 350hp and a big fat torque curve. 180ftlbs at 2900rpm, basiclly 220ftlbs from 5300-8400 rpm. Larry gives a generous warranty with all his engines. If it brakes he fixes it for free including shipping. I think it's 3 years unlimited mileage. I'll see him on Monday and verify that.

  • 1 year later...

Well, as usual I procrastinated until I was too late to wait any further so saw a Tire Rack "Sale" and just shopped.

Haven't killed my NT-01's yet but have several track days coming up and wanted to save them as my year round street tires while they still had a fair amount of tread left and weren't heat cycled out.

Tire Rack has the 17" Enkie Tengin Tuner wheel available and since I just haven't found any 5 X 100, 8"-9" X 15" wheels that will fit I broke down and ordered a set of the 17's. 8" -35 / 9" -45, so pretty close to what I have now with my Team Dynamics.

Went with B.F.Goodrich R1-S slicks in 235 front, 255 back. 275 would probably fit but the 275 NT's are really close to the fender lip and I'm not exactly sure that the tire profile may be a bit more "square so better safe than sorry.

Going to be a couple of weeks before I get the wheels and tires here and on the car so probably not in time for my next track day. As soon as I get them on and run a few sessions I'll post my own humble opinion of the tires and what I feel they have, or don't have, over the NT-01's, which I do like.

If you want to spend days of frustration surfing the web sites try to find a set with the right staggered widths, staggered offsets and the 5X100 pattern. I can find literally thousands of rims out there for my Camaro or MINI, have bought plenty for both with no problem. I almost did what RNR did and bought two "almost matching" front and rear wheels. With the different offsets you really don't notice that his don't match. I probably should have gone to narrower rims, found a lot of those, but wasn't sure about going to narrower tires as I had a set of 205's already and found them to be too narrow. I have a set of 6 1/2" rims they were on but 205 is about the tire limit for them.
