Instead of working on the seven

Just a personal observation-experience... I bought a new 5.7 ltr Tundra a couple years ago, primarily to use as a toy hauling vehicle. Looking back, I wish I had spent the same or less on a used Diesel. The Tundra gets very little use and pretty good mileage when not towing, and only 8.5 to 9 mpg when towing our 24' race trailer. As little every day use as the truck gets, I think I would have been better off with a used 3/4 or 1 ton diesel. My friends get 13 to 15 mpg with theirs. Of course if it is used more on a daily basis as transportation instead of primarily a tow vehicle, it wouldn't really be an issue.

I test drove a quad cab duramax first. REALLY wanted to like that truck, but the wheelbase was just too damn long. It BARELY made a U turn from a left turn lane across 3 lanes of traffic, and it just felt REALLY heavy - even compared to a Suburban. And the gas mileage on the new diesels isn't what it used to be a few years ago. So I just gave up on the diesel truck idea :-/

New diesels ate really great pullers, but if you don't pull most of your miles its hard to justify the higher fuel price plus 100.00 dollar oil changes. Most brands require exhaust fluid too. Never though would be a word in my vocabulary. I have 2005 dodge quad cab diesel that has been great. It gets 21-22 mpg empty and pulling my Ultralite on an open trailer gets 20-21 mpg at 75 mph. Newer trucks will be lucky to do 15. Might look at the f150 Eco boost a friend has one and it hauls ass plus gets 23 mpg empty and are reported to get decent mileage towing. They have a good tow rating to boot.

I have been v happy w/my '11 Touareg. It can tow 7700 lbs, gets 32 mpg at 70 mph, 22mpg around town, and has the footprint roughly the size of an Accord, so easy to drive. Towing my 16' enclosed trailer it gets abt 12 mpg @ 70mph.

I just picked up a Ford Flex Ecoboost for the wife and it is great. Seats 7, 23 mpg highway, 4500 lbs towing and faster than my GTI in a straight line.

Yes, a TDI Touareg. Except for the unpronounceable, meaningless name, I love it.

Touareg are denizens of the Sahara desert. I guess VW wants to suggest a suitability of this car for the Paris-Dakar rally. Well at least while that still took place in Africa....
