Donor engine sources

I got a message from a sevener in Austria I know, looking to buy a donor engine in the US as the donor engine market does not exist in Europe. His question:

Ever since the 2.5l I-4 engine (89x100) appeared on the market I wanted one for rebuilding. Donor engines in Europe are very rare. In the US there are numerous portals for replacement engines and the prices are reasonable starting at USDL 1000 - 2000 depending on milage.

Now my question can anyone of you recommend a reliable source for buying such a used engine in the US??.

Where do people on this forum source their donor engines? Ebay generally will only deliver USA addresses. Any other sources that people have found reputable?

Thanks in advance

Here in the Phoenix area, like elsewhere in the US, we have self serve wrecking yards. I just bought a 2.2 liter for a Subaru Legacy at one of these places. They come with a 30 day exchange warranty and it cost me 165.00 USD. It had high mileage, 190,000 miles, but the car had 206,000 miles on it so it was a perfect match.

In other full service wrecking yards, low mileage engines go for about 700-1000.00 USD. But I'm a LoCost bastard, so I chose the former.

Your friend in Austria could easily look up motors on ebay located in the USA. He could also request a shipping quote from those yards that ship on a crate. I would think it would be expensive but if that's the only source for a motor, what's the choice. Ford sells a race prepped 2.0 Liter engine for $5,200 less ECU or harness.

You should mention to your friend to check some of the English suppliers. Last year I saw an add in the UK where someone (I cannot remember the business) was selling new complete Zetecs with electronics and induction for reasonable money. Getting a motor in the UK will save him shipping and import duties.

He should check some of the UK 7 groups for leads.

My 2 cents worth.

Good luck.

why can you use ford Cosworth engine? - i thought that engine are abundant in europe?

They are but they're not cheap. I got a quote for a 290 HP Cosworth 2.5L engine at $19K without harness or electronics. With harness and electronics, add another $3.5K depending on which system chosen. Their cheapest motor was around $11K if I remember correctly. Very very good motors but at a price not many will or could pay.
