I took the spare wheel off for a run the other day.

 

I noticed the reduced weight and I think there was less wind buffetting due to the smoother rear surface.

 

Think I will go without and eventually design a removable tire rack for long journeys

I removed the tire rack long time ago and went on several tours of 3000-4000 miles. For the unlikely event of a leak I have the fix-a-flat inflator. In case of a larger gash the Seven can drive a while on a flat tire (slowly) or I can just whip out the AAAplus card.

The car needs something back there. No way I'm going to carry around a big fat wheel and tire! Instead I have a styrofoam block dressed up all nice. Been thinking of making a fiberglass box out of it so I can carry stuff.

Very nicely done. I thought maybe it was aluminum first off. The straps really make it work. Nice bottom pan also.

It would be great to have some storage on the car. I also don't carry spare but I only do day trips . Your windshield appears to be curved? and What size tires are you using, those look large in photo?

As I have found at track days, leaving the spare on can promote tail-wag: the mass of the spare tire promotes sideways momentum. Never noticed any issues on the street (where my driving style is somewhat more sedate). Also like the idea of a bit of buffer between me and the cell phone addict in the car following me.

 

I haven't had a new car in years that has a real spare. Most have an air compressor that plugs into the cigarette lighter and a can of fix-a-flat. No reason that wont work on a se7en (except for the cigarette lighter part:)).

Kitcat lets be politically correct and call the cigarette lighter a POWER PORT if you know what I mean :jester: as most new cars do not come with a cigarette lighter any more.....:smilielol5: :rofl:.....have a nice day as I am going to go out to my car and push in the cigarette lighter just to see if it still works even though I do not smoke.

I ditched my spare tire years ago and now carry a Safety Seal ATV tire repair kit with a few additional CO2 cartridges, and also a Mini Versair dual action hand pump in case the CO2 runs out or I need to adjust tire pressures when on tour.

 

The hand pump may sound like an exercise in futility, but they work surprisingly well in a low volume/low pressure situation like a se7en. A lot of items targeted at bikers are also applicable to us given our obsession with size and weight...or lack thereof

I did the same as John. With the exception of I took a 12v compressor and cut the power tip off and put clips that I can clip on the battery. I use this in all my vehicles it's faster than mounting a spare.
