NJMP Lightning Track Day

Great day on the track! 70 and sunny. It was a last minute event as some other group cancelled. Only 18 drivers and lots of open track. I did my best times ever, under just 1:15!!! Watch out Croc. I have two weekends to practice before our June Se7ens gathering.

Karl has found the loud pedal!!!:driving:

Karl, on Friday the best Ash, Dom and I did was 1:16+ Looks like you are the big dog now as Croc hasn't gone that fast yet either. Congrats!

I think I dipped into upper 1:15's on my best laps there in the past, so you have definetly gotten more competitive Karl!

Care to share your speed "secrets"? I know you added some power, but you are obviously picking up speed everywhere, not just on the straights.

Well after watching that lap, 100+ more horsepower certainly makes a huge difference. Your speed on the straights are certainly alot higher than I've got. My top speed this week was only 124.8. and on the turn 6 straight, I only got to 105.

It should be alot of fun when we all get together in June.

Most of my laps were in the 1:16 range. Funny thing was that I was annoyed that the Subaru was going too slow as I chased him around. Goes to show you can learn something from anyone.

Mostly, I tried to stay full on the gas wherever I could and get back on the gas hard as I came out of the corners. I definately picked up lots of time in the lightbulb by going 15 MPH faster through it and getting on the gas much earlier as I exited it. A few extra HP and a few less lbs made a big difference too.

Later in the day, I did spin out in turn 7 when trying to start braking later, but barely went off track. I'll call it the Kitcat special!

Next on the list is to learn left foot braking...

Not sure what the "lightbulb" is, but you were abt 15 mph faster at the apex of the huge banked bowl leading to the front straight (Turn 10?), than last year. Also your top speed was abt 20 mph faster than mine at the end of the straight. In fact you entered the straight going as fast as I went at the end of the straight. So you really launched from the apex at the bottom of the bowl all the way to end of the straight Those little thngs start to add up:)>

Why left foot brake, I thought your shifts were clutchless?

The Lightbulb is the same as the huge banked bowl.

As I am told, I can pick up time by not lifting with my right foot and transitioning to braking. So, left foot breaking would allow me to go straight from full throttle to breaking, saving a few tenths of a second in every breaking zone. This can only be done with clutchless downshifts.

I'm practicing in the daily driver for now, but it sure feels weird... I haven't had the nerve to try it on the track yet.

Why oh why would you need to save a few tenths of a second on a track day?

While I have left foot braked during races I found the benefits marginal at best on do not bother any more. It just gives more wear and tear on the car for no advantage. You would be better off focusing on carrying higher speed through the corners and getting on the power earlier.

  • 2 weeks later...

Count me in for Sunday, I'm now registered as well. I had such a great time at the members day yesterday that I just couldn't resist. Thanks again to Tom and Mike for setting that up. Maybe we are going to get big enough for our own run group...

I may be bringing a friend with an M3 as well... I hope that's ok. Mike said it was ok, but that may have been just so he doesn't have the biggest car :)

I'm not sure I was all that quick, but hopefully I'll see you at the end of June. When I stopped by the shop last week they said you were having clutch problems... everything ok?

Well, I was showing off to my son... how to do a burnout and slipped the clutch. Nasty smell, but it is working for now. I ordered a race clutch and light flywheel. I'll have Bert put it in at some point. It's a quick job once the engine is out!
