I'm getting around to wrapping the header with insulation material. It looks like it is needed. The tail pipe bracket broke so I'm doing that repair, so while I'm at it I'm installing the tape. The back side of the Alt. is melted and the foam around the battery shows signs of heat.

You might want to consider moving the battery to the other side of the engine, or on the shelf in front of the scuttle. Heat shortens the life of the EVO2 and they state not expose it to temps over 140F. Heat wrap will help, but it looks like you'll still be very close to the header.

The foam around the battery is from the product packaging. I used it to locate the battery on the trap and it is secured with tie wraps (like the lead-acid battery before). Looks like it has done double duty as an heat shield/insulator so far. I'll look into alter the location.

I've been working on some repairs and changes. The tail pipe has been patched and the support point modified. I had a muffler shop move the exhaust exit from in front of the tire to behind. It was just welded that resulted in the breakage. So the support has a cradle and a clamp.

Added a bung for an O2 sensor.

Modified the pipe to conform better the frame.

Moved the battery back about 3 inches.

And added a heat shield. I'm guessing the radiant heat from the header did some melting of the foam.

The next item, is to wrap the header with tape. I have a kit with 50 ft of 2 in fiberglass tape. The header is a 4-2-1 and I'm puzzling on how to do the separate parts. I'm stumped on how to handle where two pipes join.

Great job but just as a side note about 5 years ago I had my complete exhaust system ceramic coated. The guy mentioned he could also coat the inside of the headers thereby preventing the heat from escaping. I had a little skepticism but gave him the go ahead. Before removing the headers and wrap I took some temp readings and the again after coating with no wrap, the temps were within 10º C in either direction. 5 years later and this time my coolant overflow tank has not melted. My feet however still complain.

I've been looking for molded rubber parts to cover the post. I happened to find the plastic ones at NAPA. These do the job. Sure looks better that the plastic tape.

I'm going to use the insulation kit I have on the shelf for now. I'm going from bare pipes to wrapped. I haven't done any temperature measurements yet, so the improvement will be subjective.

Do you know what type of coating material was used and how was it applied? Something to look into for a next step.

Here's the company that coated mine and the product they used.

Also the silver exterior coating appears to be wearing well especially considering the blasting it receives from front wheel debris.

I may want to check this statement and see if the coating is inside as well as outside. If so, it will make the hot weather driving more bearable. :ack:

I picked up my ceramic header on Monday and they have nice satin silver exterior coating. Since the inside was bare, I decided to install the fiberglass wrap. The majority of the last section is outside I didn't wrap it.
